Westbound traffic was halted for 17 hours while crews cleared wreckage. Identified dead include civilian engineer G B G Graham and sailor Rena J Carlson among others. The bodies were recovered from the Colfax area and hospital treatment extended to army dependents. Investigations found no sabotage. a single oak tree helped prevent further casualties.

Man Killed by Autos in San Leandro
Kenneth Cleminson a 74 year old San Leandro resident was struck at 8:80 am at Harlan and 14th Streets and crushed by three or four following cars in rainy darkness. Driver Frank George 274 Be. Jackson St Maynard told police he could not see Cleminson until impact. An umbrella lay beside him indicating poor visibility. Cleminson suffered a fatal skull fracture two broken legs and a broken arm.

Boy Burns Hand As Experiment Blows In Face
Hayward High School student Dan Kix attempted an explosive experiment using saltpeter sulfur and shaved coal in an oil can. When he struck the can with a hammer the mixture ignited causing a powder burn on his left palm and minor injuries to his right forefinger. He told deputies he was studying chemistry from magazines and had learned about explosives from science publications.
