Roosevelt Wins Fourth Term and Democrats Advance in 1944

Early national returns show Franklin D. Roosevelt elected to a fourth term and the Democratic party gaining a majority in Congress. Roosevelt led in 34 states with 407 electoral votes, while Thomas E. Dewey held 14 states and 124 electoral votes. Popular vote counted to date favored Roosevelt about 20.86 million to 18.28 million. Counts included thousands of service ballots yet to be tallied and 383 House seats reported: Democrats 214, Republicans 107, with third party totals minor. Continued results expected on page three.

Recreation Commission Announces New Class In Folk Dancing

The Hayward Recreation Commission adds a free time program feature with adult folk dancing led by Mrs. Robert Berry who holds a masters in the subject. Classes start Wednesday nights from November 22 with plans to use the Hay Loft facilities pending Community Council approval. For details call Mrs. Berry at L406T.

Community Theater Plan for Hayward Area

Hayward residents plan a community theater group to be formed Saturday night November 2 at the Sandoval home. Announcement appeared in the Hayward Recreation report by Gerilon to the Hayward City Council. The program lists crafts, games, hockey, badminton, archery, dancing and a show of American glass, with folk dancing classes planned.

Morris Seigel of 1402 C Street reported to police Tuesday morning that his son Donald’s bicycle was stolen from Marie Han School on Monday night. The bike is described as black and blue with a Western Miley Hayward license 44.

Aged Man Killed In San Leandro Auto Crash

Charles R. Titus aged 66 of San Leandro was killed on Foot Hill Blvd near 18th Ave when his body was thrown onto and under an oncoming car driven by John T. Noonan. Noonan said he swerved but could not avoid striking Titus at 30 to 45 mph. Titus suffered compound fractures and severe facial injuries.

Democrats Carry City of Hayward in Local Vote

Election tallies from Hayward show Franklin D. Roosevelt prevailing with 1964 votes to 1190 for Dewey among 9162 total voters. Downey leads Lt. Gov. Man Is Freed On Charge Of Threatening

Carl Zambuto was found not guilty after denying he threatened his son-in-law Prank Scarpine with a shotgun over rent. Scarpine testified he asked for lower rent to $85 for a three room house. Zambuto refused, said they should move, and allegedly retrieved a gun. Scarpine and his wife corroborated the confrontation. Zambuto said he did not recall using a shotgun or taking one from his house.

Citation Issued To Garbage Dumper In San Lorenzo Village

A citation was issued to a person identified as KJ. O'Brien of 160K Via Segundo San Lorenzo Village for admitting to dumping garbage on the west side of Marsh Rd near Alvarado over the weekend. Mrs. O'Brien A was traced by letters found on the property.

Wreck Ignores Sierra Nevada Tragedy Kills 12

Colfax California report on a Southern Pacific Challenger passenger train wreck three miles west of Colfax near the Sierra Nevada summit. Twelve people were confirmed dead and many injured as cars derailed and plunged into a ditch. Army doctors treated the injured at Dewitt hospital while rescuers searched for more victims. Red Cross officials in San Francisco provided the initial death toll.
