About 50 cement workers on the Hayward San Mateo bridge construction walked out Wednesday over a demand to raise wages from 50 to 62 cents an hour. Officials say the strike is not seriously hampering work and expect return by Saturday with a possible wage agreement or new crew.
The Union School district pleads for approval of bonds after two failed two thirds majorities. The high school board warns debts must be met and taxes may rise. Voters are urged to attend the Saturday election to prevent further fundraising and future direct tax needs.
Hayward Union high school's annual publication The Winged H is being laid out under Editor in chief John Gerrie with a strong staff. The book is eagerly anticipated by students and expected to debut within the next month.
Tennyson P T A stages a comedy entitled Safety First at the Tennyson school auditorium on Saturday evening May 18 under the Tennyson Tarent Teachers association. Directed by Mrs Ira B Hodgkins the cast includes Jack Montgomery Jerry Arnold Mabel Montgomery and others with James Hunter performing Scottish songs between acts. The play begins at 8 15 pm with admission 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for children. The May 13 Parent Teachers meeting will be held Friday evening at 8 oclock.
Sympathy is expressed to Mr and Mrs Jilliao Cosmer on the death of infant Frances Cosmer at the family home on Silva Avenue on Wednesday afternoon May 16. Frances was 22 days old. Funeral services were held at Fratt Mortuary at 4 oclock and at All Saints Catholic Church with interment in St Josephs Cemetery.
At the May San Lorenzo Parent Teacher Association meeting a picnic was planned for Saturday May 26 likely at Niles Canyon. A committee was formed to investigate opening a day nursery at Ashland school and reports from the 16th District Convention in Alameda were shared. Mrs J W Squire of Oakland council PTA installed officers: Rose Bulger president Humann 1st vice president Gansberger 2nd vice president Fornquist secretary Hubert financial secretary Jacobsen treasurer Hanson author Ogden historian Lawson parliamentarian Wallace gad Sirs Patterson velegules.
A lengthy board session settled several items and referred others for data. A mandatory quarry of weed destruction was approved, with liens for noncompliance. Castro Street widening, street line buttons, and demolition of the Memorial Park pavilion were considered or referred to committees.
The Hayward Review launches a business building campaign within Hay wards trading area with about 3500 dollars in prizes including automobiles and cash. Participation costs nothing and the schedule rewards early lead with higher voting value, while a secret closing ballot counts votes by a contestant committee.
The Palma Circle Neighbors of Woodcraft hosted a costume party at Dania hall on a Wednesday evening. Prizes were awarded to Eilen Betten court Marian Peck Mabel Brockman for women and Bert Stephens Miles Harrington for men, with refreshments served and plans for future events announced. Also notes on local real estate listings and a Babe Ruth homer update from Yankee Stadium.
A free informal cooking school for Hay ward women led by Alice Goodman, noted household economist. Classes Monday to Wednesday at 2 pm cover Angel Food, egg boiling, water tricks, and cooking apparatus with questions invited and no sales pressure.
Mrs F C Wright of rleta avenue departed today for Finland where a sister lies critically ill. Friends and P E O sisters show concern over the family emergency.
