The century old Hayward walnut, long a landmark at the Methodist church, was cut last week as part of preparations for a new building. Lumber will be used for chancel woodwork and furniture. Thomas Plant directed the felling. photographer Les Kent captured a worker perched high as a limb dropped.
Hayward's community effort to collect 10 000 cans in a Knights of Columbus led drive struggles as weeklong total so far lags with only about 10 to 15 cans per large barrel at multiple groceries. Committee member Gordon Scheimer urged residents to donate this weekend to surpass the target. The drive, tied to Catholic leaders' call for 20 million cans for Europe and Asia, is chaired by J Peringeotte with Father Fred Conk and a committee including Richard Silva L Costa J Dutro Manuel Duarte Tom Marshall Rudy Tomicich V Clawson T Martin D McDonna Lawrence Silva and Bonvas.
Two local men, F.C. Pete Weston and Victor Costa, were elected to top posts in the San Leandro Lions club. Weston was named president and Costa secretary for the coming term. Installations are set for Wednesday May 29 at Club Alaban with about two hundred reservations already made.

Minor injuries were reported for Anita Lehman aged 26 and Joseph Sally aged 36 after a three car crash at 180th Avenue and East 14th Street yesterday morning. The Lehman and Walter Smith vehicles collided, pushing Lehman into Altus Morris’s car. no citations were issued.

Instructions were to be sent to local draft boards confirming men in their 20s to 29s are now eligible. The top age was raised from 25 by President Truman.

Mack Harrison Myrick, 89, of Parker Dam California, was killed last night when struck by a Southern Pacific train near the Niles tower. He and his brother Jack Myrick, 41, were sitting on the tracks eating a meal at 9:20 p.m. thinking the train would pass on the main line. both were ex servicemen. The engineer Loyal Moeller said he did not see anyone on the track and fired the emergency stop. the fireman Otis Smith believed they had struck something. The two brothers were working with a section gang near Niles and planned to travel to Parker Dam to visit Myrick’s wife.
Several local butcher shops closed today amid a meat shortage. Butchers Union Local 129 secretary Jim Cantando of 2311 Webster Street Oakland said the closures were voluntary and he had not contacted any rear market proprietors. He suggested no protest to black market operations.

Camp Shoemaker at Plensin ton faces closure with Shoemaker hospital and receiving station to shut by July 1. The separation center to operate until end August as 15,000 men fall to about 6,000, with patients moved from Shoemaker to Oak Knoll. Funeral services for Francis James Henrietti Sr. 87 of 790 Laurel Avenue were at C. P. Bannon Marwary on East 14th Street. He is survived by his wife Mabel three sons Francis J president of the Wayward 40 30 club John P Leland J and a daughter Marilou. He was brother of Katherine Kath rines John Menrietta and the late Cirace Gilmore.
