Ernest Besix, northern California director of the American Civil Liberties Union, announced a congressional investigation into the case of Morton A. Carabel, a 31-year-old Boston writer called the forgotten Man of the Marine Corps. Washington reports Senate critics say a $2500 tax free expense account for House members risks a black eye for Congress. In San Francisco the million dollar ferry Yerba Boon was renamed the Ernie Pyle in a ceremony honoring the late war correspondent. Built in 1927 for 1 million, the harbor boat was taken over by the Army Transportation Corps last March and served commuters between Oakland and San Francisco before the Bay Bridge opened. Sponsor was seven-year-old Vandra Bush, Pyle’s goddaughter.
The Red Cross will prioritize notices to the next of kin of American soldiers recently released from European prison camps.
