MacElwain has been granted a leave of absence for 0 days by the port of Oakland to pursue development of Hayward airport. He has worked at Oakland since 1828 and is expected to know the industry’s organizational and procedural problems. His appointment follows Monday’s resignation of port manager C EB Gibson.
Mrs Willian 2 Sutherland of 22248 Baywood avenue will be honored as part of the First Presbyterian church Red Cross production unit. Thirty three unit members receive individual certificates of appreciation and a group award for sewing for servicemen at Oakland naval supply depot. A five hour program includes luncheon and a station tour.
Mary L. Souza aged 72 died in San Leandro. Kaneral services were held at Sorensen Brothers chapel and a Mass was sung at All Saints church. Interment in St. Joseph’s cemetery. A Hayward native, she lived in San Leandro three years and was linked to S.P.B.S.T. and Royal Neighbors. Survived by Manuel and several Souza relatives in Oakland Hayward and San Leandro.
Night-long talks between AFL transportation union and transit management failed to reach a settlement after 14 hours of mediation. Union walked out saying negotiations were hopelessly bogged down. No further meetings were scheduled as the eight day-old strike continued. May 17.
A local man was cited for drunk driving after his car left the road and entered a gully about half a mile from Bocht mer h Christensen. The driver sustained facial and chin abrasions from the 4:45 p.m. crash.
Hayward postmaster Anthony Foster outlines a plan to transfer area mail service from rural routes to city delivery. The survey covers Castro Valley Seven Hills North of Tennyson road near Hayward and Fullview Avenue area.
