Judge E W Engs opened the defense case for A R Shurtleff J L Davis J J Collier and Jack Gardella as Louis King denied taking part in the alcohol delivery. King testified to denials while Eugene Q Watson testified for the prosecution. Character witnesses were heard and co defendant Ray Lamberson and others denied taking bribe money in the paving case.

New Building for Star Cleaners Erected to Meet Fire Rules
Star Cleaners will occupy a new fireproof building at Dean and Watkins streets to satisfy state fire protection standards. Leo Palming will construct the building at an estimated cost of 5000 dollars. A prior plan to renovate the current quarters was abandoned after a visit by State Fire Marshal Jay W. Stevens and Fire Chief Manuel G. Riggs.

Independent School Bond Issue Passes in Independent District
The Independent district approved a $21,250 bond issue for a new two room stucco schoolhouse by a 59 to 10 vote in a special election held last Thursday. The Independent Improvement club met Friday evening with about 60 members. Miss Bayard and Mrs Manter hosted after the business session.

Final Plans for Hayward Spring Flower Show May 17 18
Arrangements for the Hayward Spring Flower Show are being finalized. The event runs May 17 and 18 at the old Chrysler garage on Castro Street with Mrs. Clara Dodge as general chairwoman and a large Garden Club committee. Prizes include a sterling silver seven-piece service set, a study of birds by Mrs. Eichwaldt, and a designer flower bowl, with more prizes to be announced.
