Mexico Needs Dictators to Maintain Government
Edward De Freitas, Oakland attorney, told the Lions Club that Mexico has a republican form of government but needs a strong ruler to direct national affairs. He traced Mexico’s history from 1521 conquest to the present, noting cycles of rebellions and dictatorships and highlighting Diaz’s era and land distribution under Calles, with modernization and church disputes. The talk covered Central America, Panama’s lack of an army, and U.S. protection, with introductions by John Santovana and Day presiding due to the president’s ranch accident.
