Filing for state offices closed at noon Saturday with five Hayward contenders for the August 26 primary. In the 34th district for the state assembly, Mrs. Leonard Rosenberg of Hayward faces Walter P. Jost of Palomares Canyon. Jost is the long time incumbent advertising himself as farmer's friend. Sheriff race features Joseph W. Soares challenging ten others including Michael B. Driver former Berkeley mayor and ex Oakland police chief Donald L. Marshall. Hayward Portuguese Society Band Leads Holy Ghost Parade
In San Leandro the Hayward Portuguese societies joined about 25 American Legion band members in the Holy Ghost Festival parade, with the band at the head of a parade division. The event drew thousands of spectators and featured Portuguese groups from southern Alameda. The band plans a concert for the band uniform fund at the Legion hall Tuesday, before the Livermore rodeo on July 4, and will broadcast from a San Francisco station on July 11 to promote the rodeo.

Brazil, returning to the mound after a two week layoff, struck out nine and allowed four hits as the Hayward Merchants defeated Lopez Meat Market of Ashland 5 to 3 at Bret Harte School grounds. Mike Velosa led with a double and two singles in five at bats. Jesse Rogerson made two key catches in right field including a throw to nail a runner at third. Rodent Suspected in Mystery Attic Fire
A mouse or rat blamed for a Sunday night fire at Simeon Lopes residence 627 Dean Street. The blaze near the attic, about two feet, was extinguished by the fire department. Chief Riggs found a rodent nest and believes matches carried by a hungry rodent started the fire.

Company F Men Practice Sunday at Leona Heights Range
Eighteen members of Company F trained Sunday at the state range in Leona Heights. About a dozen earned scores qualifying them for marksmen or higher. Disturbance Reported As Woman Safer After Car Incident
