Billion Bushel Wheat Crop Brightens Bread Prospects
The Agriculture Department projects a 1946 domestic wheat crop of 1 025 309 000 bushels, the third straight billion bushel yield and the fourth on record. Winter wheat should total 774 558 000 bushels with spring wheat at 250 921 000, up 32 million from two months prior. Though 14th winter crop would be six percent below last year’s record, it remains a leading figure. The plan includes at least 450 million bushels set aside for civilian needs, with 250 million for export, 85 million for seed, 150 million for livestock feed, and the remainder to strengthen carryover. Ongoing reductions expected in oats, barley, and rye.

Texans Seek Senate Probe of Rapido River Battle
A Texas group led by Col. Miller Ainsworth urges the Senate Military Affairs Committee to investigate the Rapido River crossing at Salerno to Rome in 1943 44. They fault Lt. Gen. Mark W Clark for alleged incompetence causing casualties and want Clark’s promotion stalled. The 36th Division Association cites 2200 casualties January 19-21 1944 and calls the crossing a fiasco. The War Department and a subsequent Army report defended decisions stating the operation was needed to avoid worse outcomes at Anzio.
