17 More Jap Ships Sunk By U S Submarines

The U S Navy said American submarines sank 17 more Japanese ships including a light cruiser and destroyer as the war effort heads toward Saipan. British subs reportedly sunk nine Japanese supply ships, bringing total losses to 26 ships in recent Far East patrols.

Man Hangs Self From Fig Tree At Rest Home

Manuel Martin Santos, 62, of Warm Springs Rest Home near San Jose highway, hanged himself in the front yard before dawn. Lynette Dunne, a night nurse, found the body and alerted Hayward sheriff’s office. Time of death estimated between three and four o'clock. coroner Tom Berge of Irvington to take custody.

Roosevelt keeps pre medics deferment ruling intact

President Roosevelt refused to order a change in the Selective Service deferment for pre medical students beyond July 1 despite Rep. A L Miller of Nebraska urging review. The White House release states the need for young vigorous men in armed forces outweighs possible medical student deferments while noting the interagency deferments committee found many pre medical students could not practice medicine before 1948 and many would never practice.

Car And Garage Destroyed By Fire

Fire Monday afternoon partially destroyed the garage and car of Louis E. Rasmussen of 740 Sunset Bled. Cause of the blaze was not discovered. Rasmussen woke from the smell of smoke and called the fire department. All units fought to save the car but flames prevailed. A Seabee couple dwelling nearby was not injured.

Resident Physician Still Is Missing

Dr. Paul Bedsloe, 42, was to begin as resident physician at Community Hospital in San Mateo last Saturday but disappeared Friday. Hospital superintendent Ty. H. W. S. Hayes announced Bedsloe was still missing early today in a mystery surrounding his disappearance.
