London reports the Red army seized Minsk, capital of White Russia, opening a route toward East Prussia and reaching within 190 miles of the German port of Königsberg. Stalin addressed commanders praising the victory as a whirlwind campaign as Russians widen the western invasion corridor.
Fire chief Anthony August, since January 1, maintains a 24 hour duty crew of three firemen. The department holds two pumpers, a tank wagon, a light truck with relay nozzles, plus ladders, hoses, and a 14 inch feed hose. In 1927 the force was smaller and plans include adding two more men, a 28 foot ladder, and new alarm boxes at Peralta Sun, Colterway Westfield.
All city offices in Haywart City Hall will be closed Tuesday July 4 to observe the national holiday.
London reports say the German robot bomb blitz intensified over southern England. Sir Percy Alden former MP and Major General Sir Arthur Scots retired were killed in attacks using mechanical aerial weapons. novelist Tatly Lyolt was injured in the same incident.
Hitomi 44 a Japanese alien formerly in the insurance business in Sacramento was found stabbed to death last night at the Tule Lake segregation center where he was interned. The War Relocation Authority announced the charge and said he had been stabbed through the throat.
The Army-Navy E pennant for production is awarded to twenty more plants and facilities. Among the winners is the Red Grass blood donor center of Oakland Kentucky, recognized for exceptional output today.
Dr William B Thompson beloved friend of Fifth Street children celebrated his 2nd birthday on June 26 with a cake at Mrs Haurvey Beauchamp's home. Born 1452 in Dallas he practiced mainly as a nerve specialist before retiring in 1930. Now living in Hayward he recalls Civil War memories and WWI bond drives during a state wide tour in California.

California Democratic Senator Sheridan Downey says the Republican party shows weakened morale after the national convention and Gov Warren’s decision not to accept the presidential nomination. Downey notes his son’s view that the ticket isn’t as strong as a month ago despite convention enthusiasm.
President Roosevelt and high officials mourn a great loss as Norman H. Davis 65 a diplomat and longtime Red Cross chairman dies in Washington. Davis served under three presidents holding key posts and was noted as a major figure in diplomacy and relief work.
City records show only about $215 000 in Series E war loan bonds sold to date, as the fifth drive nears its Saturday finish. Temple Crane of the Bank of Haywards notes roughly $600 000 in bonds bought so far, with the family quota set at $627 061 for Series E. the latest tally indicates limited progress toward the target.
In Los Angeles a Burbank youth was allegedly held incommunicado for 44 hours and denied counsel as part of police practices during May. Superior Judge McKay listened as Attorney Vernon Gray charged the Burbank police with detaining James E. Faith Jr. The youth was released after a writ of habeas corpus.
No new developments emerged in the effort to move Superintendent Robert M. Reid from Bret Harte school. Judge Jacob Harder Jr. could not be reached. his clerk said he is away until Wednesday. Reid’s home phone rang unanswered. Reverend O D Ironmonger noted he was asked for parental preference on the relocation. The next school board meeting is set for July 14 at 9 a.m.
A spreading brush fire from southwestern San Joaquin County neared a six mile line into Alameda County as volunteers in Livermore and Vernalis naval air stations join 300 sailors to contain the blaze. Livermore youth Macho Canyon area noted as affected while Stanislaus Warden Ossie Ball appeals for more help. No communities were in immediate danger though ranch land suffered.
Ed Serpa, Hayward High School alum and 1999 All ACAL football standout, is awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement as a Flying Fortress waist gunner. He completed 25 missions as waist gunner and five as tail gunner, with six trips to Berlin and notable flights such as a mission to Frankfurt with engine loss. Serpa, 22, is praised by his mother and has also earned the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters.

Allied Supreme Headquarters reports American forces striking a 40 mile front in western Normandy in rain, initiating a new offensive. Initial gains described as indicative, with fresh British units entering the Evrecy sector southeast of Caen as Montgomery’s forces mass for a broader push toward Paris. Air support improves midafternoon as weather tempers.
The Weather Bureau issued a forecast for the Fourth of July. It calls for a clear day over most of California with morning fog near the coast giving way to sunshine in the afternoon and moderately warm temperatures. Interior valleys are expected to have sunny skies with afternoon highs from 95 to 100 degrees.
Frank Tremaine reports the 2nd Marine Division pushing through Garapan in Saipan as American naval gunfire artillery and air support hinge the assault on the Japanese defense. The capture would split Japan's Central Pacific line, with Garapan ablaze and Japanese forces retreating.
CHUNGKING UP Japanese forces fought to a standstill at Hengyang after a week of bloody combat and thrust armored spearheads 50 miles south of the encircled city to join with units driving up the railway from Canton. Strong tank and infantry formations moved south along the line below Leiyang as Chinese troops engaged them in that area.
Anthony TT Andrade of 20866 Oak Street had his car returned by the Hayward sheriff's office late Sunday night after being stolen Sunday afternoon from in front of 561 Main. The vehicle was found on 150th Avenue.
A blow torch used to strip paint at 6686 Williams St caused a gasoline jug explosion, sending Mr. T. Reasoner to hospital with third degree burns and injuring his daughter. Fire crews from Castro Valley extinguished the blaze with minimal damage to the home. Earlier, a separate three acre grass fire on Castro Valley Blvd, once owned by the late William Flett, was controlled with no further damage.
