Republicans Meet for Conference in Salt Lake City
Western Republicans from 11 states and Alaska met in Salt Lake City for a two day regional conference. Navy Sets Aside McVay Court Martial

Children Join TA Holiday Play Project at Sunset School
About 100 youngsters at Wayward Acres near Hayward joined a holiday playground project at Sunset school auditorium on Friday afternoon. Sponsored by the Hayward Area Recreation District with Sunset PTA help, the event featured a doll and puppet show, music, and dancing, under recreation supervisors Mrs. Gerry Munoz and William Herb. Judges awarded 40 prizes among 98 dolls on exhibit, with notable entries including a 27 year old boy doll by Joan Wingfield and Storybook dolls with plastic furniture by Ann Dely. Seventeen hand puppets by Sunset Girl Scout troops were shown, and a fashion segment used mothers’ old clothes for twelve small girls, with four prizes awarded in that division.

Prosecution Introduces Hirt Evidence in Court Martial
The prosecution began presenting its case in the court martial of S/Sgt. Franke Hirt accused of conspiring to spy for Germany. It planned to read a deposition by Morny Buser, a confessed Nazi spy, to link Hirt to a German agent. Buser, detained in Switzerland in 1941, said he knew Hirt and identified his photo. Hirt’s funds were seized by Britain at Bermuda and he came under FBI surveillance in Hoboken after arrival.

Man Held On Hit Run Charge In California
Claude J. Warner, 80, an agricultural worker from Porterville, held in Hayward jail on hit and run charges after his car struck a woman waiting for a bus at Whipple and Niles. The injured woman, Mrs. Inez Santiago, suffered possible pelvic injuries. Warner fled but was captured after a three mile chase aided by local witnesses and CHP officer Al Wheeler.
