Members of the American Legion post No. 88 Auxiliary hosted San Leandro Auxiliary No. 117 officers and district leaders at a dinner honoring George Washington’s birthday. Guests received corsages. the Gastra Valley Choral Group entertained, and a hospital wallet donation was made.
Boy Scouts urged residents to save newspapers and magazines for a paper drive organized by the troop. Volunteers will collect bundled papers in exchange for support, with details about collection times to be announced.

A purse belonging to Marguerite Cyolk, 86, was taken from 705 Broadway, Ohio, containing $46, but the burglars left the scene with a checkbook and money. No suspects named.
United Press reports widespread labor tension as the United Mine Workers test a new wage formula against President Truman’s plan. Coal operators expect higher prices if miners gain larger wages while strikes surge in transportation, telephone, shipping and utilities. City police prepare for staggered hours in New York and Detroit dairy workers continue protests as authorities seek to avert violence.
Civil Service examinations for a Hayward traffic officer post to fill the vacancy left by Charlie Barrett will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday at City Hall. No date set yet for the airport support manager position. C. E. Gibson received emergency appointment pending Civil Service approval.
The 82 year old German-born Bahr faces a 30 year term in a U S federal prison for conspiracy to commit espionage as he resumes testimony in a court martial for S Sgt Peele Hint. German police officer August Poepping names Hirt as trained spy told to go to America and relay military information to Berlin via Nazi agents in South America and Spain Hirt is charged with masquerading as anti-Nazi and traveling to New York in 1941 on forged credentials to relay orders from the Gestapo.
Official visitors at the Castro Valley Rod and Gun Club monthly meeting were Larry McNeill and Bill Case, district No. 3 leaders. McNeill spoke on California dams and a suspected discriminatory assembly bill, while George Strutz shared his Army mascot Stinky with pups. New members Dr James A Gay Frank Andrada Williams M Koopman and L B Smith joined as films from Remington Arms were shown and a Coleman lantern won as a door prize by William Abrott.
Body of James Barnett who died here Wednesday will be shipped by Pyatt-Fliers mortuary to his home town Oskaloosa Town where funeral services will be held. Barnett, retired, died while on a visit at the home of Mrs Olive Pugmaler in Niles. His son Charles Barnett is at Givin Toya.
Attorney Ernest Wilson, counsel for the Over Lonia sanitary district, submitted a report to the board after a motion to discharge him. He claimed his continued employ sparked savings in project financing though noted several design and financing disagreements with the county and FHA. He urged the board to act with conservative judgment, emphasizing public efficiency and economy.
Oro Loma board held a special meeting to review district work and charges against district engineer L. Cedric Macabee. No action was taken as the board heard a lengthy district engineer’s report and noted absence of key members while addressing alleged dictatorship and negligence claims and contract extras.
Henry Hopkins, a member of the Oro Loma Savilavy board, asked press representatives to publish his statement denying permission requirements for who he invites to his house. He notes rumors that Macabee paid five visits, clarifying he has made two visits. The Review says it has never published a running account of Hopkins' visitors.
Hayward Lions Club educational committee led by Herbert A. Roberts frames plans for the eleventh Pet Parade set for October 11. After wartime pause since 1941 the event aims to include divisions for children and vehicles, with entries from local schools and community groups and support from the Neyward Area Recreation district and school officials.
Castro Valley Boy Scout troop schedules an overnight hike from Castro Valley School to Meek Memorial Camp on Lewelling Boulevard in the San Lorenzo district to sleep outdoors. Dr V Lamb Henry Leber and Im Burnham oversee arrangements from a recent 14th Troop Commissioners meeting.
The Fairview district starts lot excavation for a new fire house led by Chief Bill Wolters. Donations from residents and local figures including Clara Haynes and councilman Holland total 160 with more families yet to be contacted. Firemen volunteer hours and fundraisers fund truck repairs and building costs while scrap drives and paper drives support the project.
Nine new members of American Legion post No. 64 were obligated at the regular meeting Thursday night. They are Robert D. Williams John Slurowicz Charles Bender Curtis Stoddard Leroy Perl Rich id Boyer Walter B. Stafford Allen F. Strute Edward A. Ferguson Revised Ly laws of the post 73 presented by ex-senator RV. Christin were accepted with routine business noting plans to buy a typewriter and mimeograph for the adjutant.
The State Adult Authority at San Quentin granted 14 months parole to Peter J. DeCosta 83 who was sentenced in 1944 for robbing a Hayward tavern. The action followed his reported assault on Frank Avila a bartender during the holdup, which left Avila with near fatal injuries.
