Two Hayward women reportedly tried to end their lives over the weekend. Folia Gomes 26 was found unconscious after turning on gas in her Castro and Jackson streets home but recovered. Mary Verando 35 was found on Foothill boulevard near Fairmont county hospital after ingesting poison pills and is reported recovering.

The Castro Valley volunteer fire department hosted the third annual masquerade ball drawing a wide turnout from Enrone and Castro Valley. Harold Heiser's orchestra set the mood for dancing after a grand march at 7 36 pm with prizes awarded for best costumes. Charles Mendovas to Be Given Final Tribute Tuesday
Funeral services for Charles Mendovas proprietor of the Hayward pheasantry on Dublin Road who died of a chronic heart ailment will be held at Pratt mortuary Tuesday morning at 10 oclock with Rev Joseph A Ten Broeck officiating. Burial will be at Mountain View cemetery in Oakland. He was 43 years old and survived by his wife Gina, a daughter Mary Amenta of San Francisco, a granddaughter Dita Aments, a brother and sister in Italy and a sister in Pennsylvania.

War Veterans Pay Honor to Frank Smith
Frank Smith longtime Hayward resident died in Colfax last Tuesday at about 35. His funeral Saturday at Sorensen Brothers mortuary drew many relatives friends and American Legion members. Rev Richard C Dar delivered the eulogy. Interment was at Lone Tree cemetery soldiers plot. Pallbearers included Robert Lewis Peter Cavaslia George Rothwell Stanton Soares Harry Stiva and John De Voutzen. He is survived by wife Lulia and four daughters Gertrude Margaret Irene and Maxine.
