The Hayward Chamber of Commerce canvassed local firms and found most will close Monday, December 26, with only one firm open briefly in the morning. Housewives are urged to finish Christmas shopping Saturday and stock provisions for Tuesday, per Harry Lee of the chamber.
A New Year’s Eve social is set for December 31 at the Odd Fellows hall. It will be a regular festive gathering not a costume party, resembling a 27 28 style event. Committee members C Neilsen W C Wallace George Henningsen Hebert Liebe Louis Cole and J Christen Sel lead the plans with Kelly Bros promoting gifts at 571 H Street Hayward.
The City County trustees met for about 35 minutes with Trustees Wilbur and Manter absent. Michael Murphy was granted a 60 day extension to finish the Hayward outfall Sewer due to grounding delays from heavy rains. The board approved purchasing 4,000 feet of iron casing for the Municipal Water Department, noting prices are favorable now but expected to rise after year’s start. Mayor Kolze asked remaining business be tabled until the first January meeting in honor of absent members.
Hayward City Council and Oakland Traction Company move toward ending a decade long dispute by promising to repair Castro street from a street to the city limits. New tracks will not be laid but the road will be greatly improved and work begins within a week.
Edward Hickman, LA kidnapping suspect, captured at Echo and brought to Umpila County jail. He confessed to kidnapping Marian and said a killer unknown to him committed the murder. He claimed money was needed to pay college expenses. Crowds gathered as officers guarded the jail.
San Lorenzo residents and the League of Women Voters press for removing unused street car rails along main street after the Key System line was abandoned over two months ago. They cite rusting tracks visual blight and traffic hazard while seeking to enforce the original charter requiring the company to restore the street to its prior condition.
Sidney Ransom aged resident of Hayward died at Hayward General Hospital on December 21. Funeral services will be held December 24 at 2 PM from Sorenson Cros parlors with Odd Fellows and Veterans in charge. cremation at Oakland crematory. He lived in Hayward about 30 years. wife Caroline died in 1823. no children. Juncho Sugine daughter of Nobutaro Sugino and Mrs Sugino of Mt. Eden died December 20. services were at Pratt Mortuary chapel with cremation at California Crematory.
Dartel K. Trudacn former resident of Hayward and Oakland died suddenly at a friend’s home in Hayward last night after a short visit. Services under Bayview Lodge of the Masons begin at 3 o clock Saturday.
December 24 at the Oakland crematory, the husband of the late Henrietta Parke Truelsen and father of Carl J. Truelsen of Berkeley, brother of Knud Truelsen of San Francisco.
Hans of Modesto and Mrs Anna Waag of Denmark are listed with Truelsen as members of Alia Lodge 295 I O O F San Francisco, Danish Brothershood, and Bayview Lodge of Masons Oakland.
The Presbyterian church hosts a Friday evening Christmas program at 7:45 featuring Miss Morse's class, a cantata The Gift of Gods Love, a Christmas tree, and candy nuts offerings. Sunday school volunteers and congregants prepare with anticipation for a festive night. Kelly Bros. offers shopping help for gifts.
Last rites were held for Manuel Furtado 78 a native of Portugal and longtime Hayward resident. A funeral mass followed at Saint An’s Church, with interment at Holy Sepulchre cemetery. Survived by wife Mary and children including Manuel A Rosie Morris Tony and several daughters and sons.
