Hayward Union High School welcomed its first day with more than 600 students streaming into the new building. Principal Frederic P. Johnson addressed the assembly before students received locked room assignments and book distribution details led by Miss Carmelita Beil.
Katherine Petrella 1 of Oakland appeared before Judge Jacob Harder Jr claiming two Hayward men James Simmons and Mack Madeiros assaulted her seeking employment. She says Simmons and Madeiros and a woman named Betty attacked her as she tried to resist, with Madeiros directing the attack.
A brake inspection campaign named Better Brakes will run in Alameda County from August 29 to September 3 under the East Bay Safety Council. Chief John M. Lewis will lead the drive in Hayward with Boy Scout volunteers distributing car tags and windshield stickers. A Friedli brake tester was provided to test cars, starting with Judge Jack Harder’s vehicle which passed as excellent.
Hayward artist Will Frates and auto trip companion Clarence Hagedorn left Saturday to sketch outdoor subjects along a route through the Sierras and Rockies. They will visit Lake Tahoe Donner Lake Reno and Salt Lake City while Frates also plans to sketch scenes for future works. Frates recently gained notice for Wind Blown Oaks of Monterey.
Arthur E. Costa 25 a native of Hayward and later of San Mateo died Sunday August 28 in San Mateo. Requiem high mass will be held Wednesday August 31 at All Saints Church after services at Sorensen Brothers Funeral Partners. Interment at Holy Sepulcher cemetery. Survived by wife Mrs Yvonne Costa and son Robert Arthur, plus brothers Antone Ernest Leo and Eugene. Parents were the late Mr and Mrs Antone Costa. He was born and raised in Hayward and lived in Valle Vista before moving to San Mateo.

Hayward faces delays in selecting an outfall sewer as four proposals with costs from 65 000 to 99 000 are reviewed. City Council postponed the special session due to a legal holiday and will reconvene tonight to consider bids tabulated by City Engineer Jesse B. Holly.

Robert Rogers and Lauren Van Wagner appeared before Judge Jacob Harder Jr on charges of stealing an automobile owned by B. R. Arnswold of Pelton Court Gan Leandro. The Burma sacred white elephant Pawah will be shown by the Rinsling Bros and Barcum Bailey shows in Oakland for two days August 1 and September 11. He is the only genuine sacred white elephant in America and arrives with keeper Dr J. Po Min and a Burmese retinue of fourteen. This is Pawah’s only season in the U.S. and plans are to return him to Burma at tour’s end.
Lisara Azevedo appeared before Judge Harder Jr after Marr Azevedo accused her husband of knife attacks. She testified to repeated abuse, with August 12 cited for another attack. A six month jail term was imposed, and she remarked the sentence was insufficient.
The Hayward Health Center will receive help from the Farm Bureau and Farm Home Bureau to address child weights. Mrs. Marietta Holman and J. Murray Davison will assist. menus and cooking guidance come from Mrs. Holman. Davison will oversee garden work and goat loans to milk-starved families. program starts Sept 1. Miss Beard and Miss King complete initial weighing and will resume data collection and home visits. First aid kits from the Health Center have been sent to seventeen schools.
The Sening club of the Eastern Star invites members to a Friday luncheon at 1 o'clock on September 2 in the Mason Temple. Mrs. Teck, in charge of arrangements, and Mrs. Max Heyer, Worthy Matron, lead plans. Mrs. Hook, of Walnut Creek, hosted a luncheon last Wednesday for about 40 matrons with cards to follow.
The S R S 1 met Friday in the Native Sons hall and outlined plans for the annual prize whist set for November 15. Mrs Emma Pereira presided. Prizes include turkeys and other desirable items to be purchased for winners with a full prize list to be announced later.
The Dublin canyon highway reconstruction began Monday, costing about 40,040,000, with six and a half miles of road to be shortened and straightened. A. S. Moore of the California Highway Commission noted major earthwork, removal of the Pergola grade, and elimination of the dangerous Dublin Corners crossing. The contract was awarded to the Aris-Knapp Company of Oakland and the John A. Carson Company of Hayward.
