Joyous bells welcomed 1635 pupils as Hayward grammar schools opened for 10 months of study in reading writing arithmetic music and drawing. Luther Burbank and Markham campuses overflowed prompting temporary rooms and reassignments while 62 teachers prepared for the year and plans for district attendance were announced.
Dr Bertha Stuart will assist with medical examinations at the University of California for the next two weeks. She attended last year’s examinations and has taught in the summer school for several years.
Castro Valley merchants organized a Sunday picnic at the Cook place on Redwood road drawing over 300 residents. Cooks Gon salves and Leith led barbecue for steaks and beans while contests, games, dances, and music provided entertainment. prizes, including a Ford car race, were awarded along with door favors.
Alphonse Marques of San Francisco, accused of possessing a still found at a San Lorenzo nursery in May 1976, will have a hearing before Judge Jacob Harder Jr. in justice court on September 17. He was captured August 14 in San Francisco and released on $1000 bail. A warrant for R. Ferrari for participating in operating the same still remains unserved.
Cypress camp 1141 Woodmen of the World announces a ladies night Tuesday at Bank of Haywards hall. Whist starts at 9 pm with refreshments and many prizes. J. F. Feldermann chairs the event. committee members include Clarence Raulino Frank Aives Jack Simpson and Herbert Bedford.
A new Wilmont castle sterilizer from Bischoff Surgical House in Oakland is now in operation at Hayward Central hospital. The apparatus enhances the hospital's growing equipment and is held as a pride by management.
Hayward will host the final of nine union church meetings this Sunday at the Presbyterian church on B Street. Rev. Charles E. Lukens Jr. delivered a sermon from Acts about healing and faith, comparing modern faith to a chameleon trying to match every piece of life. The Hasejo Bible class plans a 7:30 p.m. social next Friday with proceeds to the pipe organ fund. attendees are asked to bring one cent per year of their life.
The Hayward council of the Knights of Columbus hosts a weekend of events starting Saturday with a dance at the Hayward Highlands clubhouse featuring the toy Rovers. Sunday offers an all day barbecue at the Geary ranch in Crow Canyon with guests Robert Rooney and Walter Chowan and head barbecue artist J B Lopes assisted by Louis Silver.
Herbert L Bovard a 46 year old carpenter contractor disappeared Friday morning after leaving home to buy groceries. He was last seen in shirtsleeves with gray trousers gray cloth hat driving a 192% Essex automobile. Authorities were notified Monday morning and said he had $350 in his pocket while on business in Alameda San Leandro.
City leaders sponsor a paper drive to raise funds for the first unit of a Hayward playground and recreation system. Mayor John Lee Wilbur and Dr. Flavia Prentise back a city wide effort with school participation to collect papers, contests, and prizes. Proposals seek land and a supervisor from schools to supervise the new playground. Receipts fund media equipment for the playground.
The Hayward San Mateo bridge is reported 51.3 percent complete under Arthur Beatty of Raymond Concrete Pile. Progress includes 2552 piles driven 567 deck sections in place and 2220 feet of rail and curb installed last week. Portions extend over three miles into the bay with 50160 cubic yards of marsh fill placed.
Three boys accused of letting a wagon roll downhill, stealing tools, and breaking windows at the Andrew Gerin ranch on Niles road were placed on probation for one month by Judge Jacob Harder Jr. The judge urged them to attend school and report on their behavior.
Both Hayward baseball squads were defeated Sunday at Union High School grounds. The Hayward Legion Juniors lost to the Key Route Sun Florists 1 to 2, with costly pitching by Costello and Bill Brown. The Army store squad fell 10 to 1 in 12 innings against the Allendale Merchants.
Frank C. Wright a Hayward resident of 14 years died early Monday after an Oakland bound trip ended in a San Francisco streetcar incident Saturday. He worked at the Emporium and lived at 16932 B Street Bonnie Brae in Hayward. His wife a PEO member survives. funeral arrangements by Sorensen Brothers Mortuary were pending.
Hayward Post No 63 of the American Legion begins a blanket campaign to fund uniforms for the Legion band. Five hundred blankets from Oregon City arrive by boat and will be displayed at the old Bank of Italy building. Willard Smith leads the drive, with a barbecue at Hermann Sens park next Sunday to raise more funds. The band seeks recruits for a strong turnout at the state convention in San Diego in 1929.
Charles L. Lester, now with Hunt Bros packing, has taken over Alta Vista auditorium in Hayward for a grand ball next Saturday. Lester, a dancer with coast experience from Los Angeles, promises a mix of old and modern dances with a top orchestra. Admission is 5 and 26 cents. proper conduct and propriety will be maintained to make the venue a popular dance hall.

The Southern Alameda County tennis championship opened at Memorial Park courts with close matches over two days. Spring singles saw King, Bedford, Cooper and Amyx reach semifinals, while Thorup and Bedford won doubles to earn a spot in the final round.
