Man Is Killed When Hit by Train in Oakland Area
John Prandle Smith, 45, of 1424 Center Street Oakland, employed by East Bay Scavenger, was killed by a Southern Pacific passenger train Sunday night while waiting along the railroad tracks in San Lorenzo. Proiette, 42, of 1436 Peratta Street Oakland, also an East Bay Scavenger worker, said they had visited friends after work and were walking home around six. He was in front. the conductor flagged the train after seeing Smith was dead. Deputies reported Smith’s head was crushed and both legs broken.

Apricot Harvest Is Successful Says Perkins
Seasonal harvesting of the Iay ward area apricot crop was very successful, said Farm Labor official T. A. Ferie ing today. Perkins noted dry yards caused staffing issues and that apricot work is largely finished. He added tomato crops may start two weeks late, around September 15, as he prepares to move to Berkeley. J. City police filed a complaint against Able I Fuentes, 29, owner of the Latin Cafe at 641 Castro St, for serving liquor to minors. Chief George Worth said Virginia Harley, 19, and Eugene W Hickox, 20, were served five bottles of beer by Fuentes. Worth observed the minors leave the Gardin Inn, cross the street, enter the Latin Cafe, and order the beer without age checks.

A blaze near Cave City in Calaveras County has burned over 1000 acres of brush and timber as crews fight a 600 acre blaze east of Carmel in Monterey County. Chief Demonstrates Foam Fire Extinguishing Method
Fire Chief Anthony August showcases a new chemical that with water makes 500 gallons of foam. In a 28 second demonstration before Mayor George Mays and council, 70 gallons of oil and five gallons of gasoline fed a 10 by 12 foot pit as eight firefighters and nine volunteers released the foamy suppressant through a hose. The searing blaze was smothered, preserving the meat as the foam covered the fire like snow. Also noted are a stove extinguisher that preserves roast meat and dry ice under pressure to blanket flames without harming the food.
