Yankee Bombers Raid Toulouse in Second Triangular Strike

A large task force of American bombers landed in England to complete the war's second triangular raid to Russia and Italy, bombing a German airdrome at Toulouse. An additional unit of 750 heavies attacked Metz railway yards and a German airfield nearby. The Brest attack used 12,000 bombs on U boat shelters as part of the week-long 4000 mile voyage. The force lost no bombers and downed four German fighters while losing none.

Drunken Driver Fined in Hayward Court

Tay W Watlers aged 7 08 Sever Hilly Wa received a $125 fine from Judge A W Bruner for drunken driving charges. Bruner presided in Hayward court in Judge Warder’s absence after Watlers’ car allegedly crashed into Marty Huston’s while turning from Castro Valley Ave onto Lake Chabot Rd. Authorities noted Watlers was intoxicated according to the California State Highway Patrol.

Refinery Burns After Explosion Of Naphtha Tank

NEWHALL CALIF UP Fire and several explosions ripped through the Newhall Refinery today forcing residents within a mile square from their homes for hours. A missing woman rushed toward the blaze believing her husband was there. A 28 000 barrel tank fed crude oil into the canyon as tanks blew up and a bulldozer built a dike to halt the flow.

Eleven Die in Gas Tank Explosion at Shawneetown Plant

Eleven people died and several were injured when a barrel storage tank at the Wabash Valley Co. farm cooperative gasol ine storage plant exploded, splintering two homes. Sheriff Moye reported watchman Joseph Ryder and his son in law Wayne Roark among the dead, six of the victims were children and two unidentified youngsters were listed missing. Identified dead included Roark, Ryder, and three of Ryder’s daughters, Mrs. Roark, Mrs. Hazel Baek, and Betty Jo Ryder.

Johns Receives Air Medal and Honors From Army Air Forces

Staff Sergeant Eugene C. Johns, 23, of 23314 Maud Ave, is awarded the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and other decorations for service with the 570th bomber squadron. He took part in a 7000 mile shuttle bombing run from England to Italy and Russia and flew missions over Nazi targets and French coast defenses. His unit has earned two presidential citations for gallantry. Johns is a graduate of Mayward Union High School with the June 1942 class.

Kidnapper Chooses Trial Over Electric Chair in Des Plaines Case

CHICAGO United Press reports Harry Glenn Page once willing to plead guilty to kidnapping three boys from a Des Plaines training school, but at arraignment he opted to risk acquittal or death in the electric chair. Page, linked to prior sex charges, was indicted under the Lindbergh Law and arrested in Los Angeles after a long search. One boy remained with him in a trailer in 20 months of pursuit. The two other boys, Frank and Ignatius Fanlis, had left the trailer near New Orleans and told police Page had kidnapped them.
