Stonybrook in Niles canyon is the site for the Federated Improvement Clubs of Eden Township annual picnic on August 11. Members from 14 clubs plus families will attend, bringing lunches to eat at noon under the trees by the brook. Nineteen prizes will be awarded in races and athletic events for youths and adults.

First Carload of Pears Sent to New York
The first carload of 1927 pears from Hayward was shipped to New York from the Farm Products Sales Company on lower BI Street. Frank Cunha, manager, calls it the opening of the finest season. Fire at Castro Valley hospital grounds injures staff and destroys barn
Castro Valley Fire Department responded to a Saturday night blaze at Fairmont hospital grounds. The large northeast barn burned completely after being set by inmate Wallace Surpear who reportedly confessed to arson. Damages are estimated at 5000 dollars and hospital employee Michael Flaherty was nearly burned. Firefighters from Castro Valley Oakland and San Leandro fought the fire for about an hour with hospital volunteers. Chief Jerry Unser led five units and about two dozen Castro Valley men, who wore their gear and fought the blaze with several engines. Surpear faces arson charges as deputies plan to file against him in county court.

East 14th Avenue Widening From Oakland to Hayward Planned
The Hayward San Leandro boulevard will be widened to 100 feet from Oakland to Ashland pending legal clearances. Fifty six parcels, with six property owners granting rights, will fund most of the project with a total cost of 311,400 for three due to buildings cut by the road. After rights are secured, paving costing about 100000 will start, expanding the San Leandro to Ashland stretch to the new width and improving access toward Hayward.
