Lt Commander Sorensen, son of busy Tree Sorensen, 1147 C street, is home after Navy service. He earned the Navy Cross and three Distinguished Flying Crosses as a Torpedo Squadron 15 pilot on the Essex, flying in the Pacific from Mare island to Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He directed a torpedo attack sinking a 45,000 ton battleship Mushai and helped sink merchant ships and enemy vessels, earning additional air medals. He entered the Navy in 1940, trained at Pensacola, served on the Hornet, joined the Essex, and later held training posts in Florida and Georgia. He is a 1930 graduate of Hayward Union High School and studied at San Jose State Teachers College prior to naval service.

Lena Stevens a 23 year old Gypsy mother was in semi conscious condition after leaping from a moving car on Russell City road during a morning argument with her husband Steve Stevens 28. He said they were driving from their Gypsy camp toward Hayward when the dispute over their six month old baby escalated. He stopped the car at about 30 miles an hour and carried her to Fairmont hospital then to Highland hospital where she remained with head injuries but no broken bones reported.

Pvt Rudolph Curtis Griffin 22 former Hayward high felon fanthall star yesterday started a San Quentin prison term after entering a guilty plea to second degree robbery. Griffin was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Homer Patterson of Contra Costa County. He had confessed to holding up and robbing Kenneth Wegner a bartender at the El Molino club in Lafayette of 292 dollars. Police recovered the money and Belgian luger Griffin used in the holdup.
