The Hayward Diamond Jubilee and Rodeo announces enrollment for a queen contest to reign over the June 26 and 27 fair. Contestants may enroll after May 1, with more than twenty expected. the queen committee is led by Frank Hanp and Walter B. Daniels as surveys seek representative young women from the district.
Residents along Lower A Street in Hayward push for installing large arc lights with poles about two blocks apart. The proposal, directed to the County Board of Supervisors and Hayward City Council, places the project under county control as it lies outside city limits. Charles Heyer of Hayward, chair of the supervisors unit, supports the installation. Proponents emphasize outward illumination and safety for the thoroughfare.
Burglars entered the home of C. Martin on Medford Avenue Meek Tract near Hasward while the family was away, stealing clothing jewelry including a hat watch and fur cape valued over 200 dollars. Constable A J La Cunha reported the incident and the family had been absent for over a week.
Joseph Caldeira of Sycamore Avenue Hayward received a suspended sentence on a disturbing the peace charge after testifying he acted in self defense during a dispute with Jordin Ramos of Oakland over a small band puzzle. Ramos’s $25 bail was forfeited. Marshal Schilling arrested Caldeira. Joe Freitas of Oakland was fined $15 for speeding 52 miles per hour.
Musical comedy by Otis Carrington presented by Washington Union High School on Friday night April 16. The combined Girls and Boys Glee Club and school orchestra perform in a Hawaii setting with a plot of an American girl, her naval officer sweetheart, pirates, and an old maid who runs the school. Pirates end up free after a comic entanglement. the show aims for a creditable, entertaining performance.
Marshal Fred P. Schilling resumes police duties after a week of inactivity due to illness confined at home. Constable A. La Cunha and deputy marshal F. B. Macahee led the Hay ward force in his absence while residents seek lighting for Sunset Grammar School.
The annual Apricot Tour of the Alameda County Farm Bureau, postponed for the fourth time, was rescheduled after unsuitable Santa Clara County orchard roads left mud covered and travel conditions uncomfortable. Russell T. Roth, farm advisor, said a new date will be announced in advance to allow agriculturists to arrange attendance.

Western Avenue boosters celebrate a large federation whist party in Eder township with 150 attendees. The Federation supports opening Western Boulevard to the Niles road, paving sections of the through artery, securing rights of way, and funding a forthcoming transportation survey and National Guard support.
A Hayward Civic League meeting in Hayward will discuss forming a county wide milk inspection district. City officials from San Leandro and several Alameda county communities, plus potential attendance from Oakland and Alameda, are expected. M. E. McDonald of the state dairy division is invited to explain the proposal.
Frank Maurice Gonsalves of Hayward suffered minor cuts and bruises and shock after being struck by Alfred Grindell’s car near Hayward. The accident occurred at the corner of B and Main streets when the youth ran into the path of the auto. He was taken to Hayward General Hospital for treatment by Grindell.
Four year old Robert Clemens, son of Dr and Mrs Nelson Clemens of Hayward, was struck by a car driven by W G Shepherd while running into the street. He suffers possible internal injuries and lacerations with a concussion, and is hospitalized at Hayward General. Police say the driver was not at fault. the child darted from the curb near Castro Street. The accident occurred around noon as relatives attempted to return a bus ride to Oakland.
Helen Gilmore of 1533 B Street correctly guessed the weight of the giant East er egg in the Chocolate Shop window at Main and B streets. The egg weighed 21 pounds exactly, earning her a $2.00 box of best candy.
Norman Vadnais traffic officer travels to Massachusetts to settle an estate. His wife Mrs. Vadnais remains in Orinda visiting her sister during the absence.
A parent teacher association is planned for Sunol, with Mrs. George Walter as district vice president leading preliminary work. This forms the ninth PTA in East Alameda, reflecting rapid growth from three groups 18 months ago. A regional conference on parental responsibility will be held in Oakland April 16 to 17, featuring notable speakers and a broad program on family and education.
