International News Service reports that of 3,256 wartime French villages, life has returned in 3,216. Forty villages may never be rebuilt after total destruction. Of nearly 294,000 homes destroyed and 295,000 damaged, over 280,000 have been rebuilt and 130,000 temporary homes erected.

Allies Send Ultimatum to Germany

London reports that Allied governments at a conference issued a firm ultimatum to Germany under the Versailles terms. Germany must pay one billion marks within twenty five days and comply by May 11 or face enforced payment and potential actions including blockade of Hamburg and seizure of frontier customs.

Fight to finish marine workers in strike stand firm

Washington May 5 President Harding refused to mediate in the Marine strike, pushing the dispute toward a finish as leader William Brown says the workers will not yield.
