Oil men of St. Louis face charges over forged checks

Information for obtaining money under false pretenses will be issued against William C. Uphoff formerly with International Oil Co St. Louis at the request of M G Temple a plumber who says Uphoff passed two checks drawn on German Savings Institution totaling 35 dollars. Checks were marked insufficient funds. Uphoff sought in St Louis on other charges and had arrived in Cape last year to sell stock. Temple and Charles Blattner indorsed or cashed checks later dishonored by the bank. Bryan G Pratt, briefly president of the oil concern, was pardoned for bigamy after a two year sentence. Banquet At Hotel Glencoe For Ar kansas Grocer Co. Employes

The Ar kansas Grocer Co. wholesale division held a banquet at Hotel Glencoe on Wednesday night. Manager J W Pyles did not attend. twelve covers were set due to superstitions around the number 13. The event celebrated a strong year for the company with a generous menu and socializing. Local manager J W Oates and assistants attended from Blytheville. A local farmer, Owen Walton, plans to read the Herald regularly after visiting Hayti and Shackleford farm activity is noted. Some stock selling schemes in Hayti were attempted but largely ignored by locals.

Cape Normal selects basketball captain for the year

Cape Republican reports Harry Gettings chosen captain after a meeting of Normal basketball players on Monday afternoon. The custom to pick a captain after the two games with Carbondale Normal was followed due to last year's anticipated graduation. Dennis Slow, a carpenter from Netherlands in Pemiscot County, returned to Cape Friday after a six week absence while completing contracts there.

Drainage Engineer Weds A Pretty Miss

Blair Boyle and Miss Ethel Hamilton were married at the Presbyterian Church in Caruthersville at ten o clock Tuesday morning by Rev. W T Browning. Hamilton is the second daughter of Mr and Mrs J M Hamilton, respected city residents. Boyle, born in Kokomo Indiana, moved here two years ago to work as an engineer for the Little River Drainage District.

Renewals pour in from Herald subscribers with warm thanks and wishes. A new subscriber Boyle from Caruthersville, now housekeeper for her son, is described as businesslike and conservative. After their wedding they will take the noon train to St Louis then return home to celebrate with friends. The Herald extends congratulations and best wishes for happiness and prosperity. Buildings Contract Awarded at Melson Town Site

Bragg and McKay announce contracts for Melson for three brick stores at 75 by 75 feet with red brick fronts, price six thousand dollars, to replicate Kennett Sperce building except color. Orville E. Campbell secures fifteen houses in varied four to five room layouts. A large brick hotel is planned, with no firm let yet. Forty acres laid out for town, Frisco railroad lays out tracks, siding, and depot site.
