City commissioners in session last night completed the 1919 budget ordinance setting expenditures at 963254.98 with a ten mill tax rate amid a projected 966000 revenue. Salary hikes for patrolmen, drivers, clerks, and many staff, plus paving and public works, drive the rise from this year’s total.
Weather predictions issued by the Weather Bureau anticipate occasional snow in the North and Middle Atlantic States early in the week, followed by generally fair weather. Temperatures are expected to be near normal, with a likely rise on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Funeral services for Chiefy Gilner a well known Harrisburg figure were held at St Patrick's Cathedral. Burial followed at Mt Calvary Cemetery after a procession from G H Sourbier funeral parlors. Gilner died Wednesday at Harrisburg Hospital after a brief illness. State Departments paid tribute with floral emblems including a keystone bearing Chiefy from Capitol employees. Pallbearers included A H Kreidler Joan H Maloney Joseph P Connelly C H Sigler Clyde B Shaffner John T Fitzpatrick.

In Coblenz on December 28 General Pershing issued guidance for residents in areas occupied by American forces. He notes limited interference with local life but orders specific rules to prevent abuse. The regulations, signed by General James W. District Governor Howard C. Fry announced the eastern district conference of International Rotary Clubs will be held in Harrisburg April 9 and 10 at the Penn Harris Hotel. Arrangements for the Penn Harris Hotel New Year’s Eve opening are complete. A seven o’clock dinner will be followed by music and dancing in the ballroom, opening for the first social use. E Z Wallower will preside at dinner and introduce Governor Brumbaugh Mayor Keister Frank Dudley of United Hotels Company and the Penn Harris president.
Otis B. Tripp and his wife Annie, residents of 2019 Wallace Street, along with four children Otis 9, Francis 7, Bertram 6, and Smilda 5, were all hospitalized in Harrisburg Hospital with Spanish influenza. Mr. Tripp works as a Pennsylvania Railroad laborer. the parents are seriously ill while the children are reported in favorable condition this morning.
The Associated Press reports in New York that thousands of visitors view dreadnaughts destroyers and other ships anchored in the North River. Sailors and soldiers keep personal experiences largely to themselves, though visitors are sometimes rewarded after persistent questioning.
Members of the Dauphin County Bar Association petitioned the court for a rule to show why Harry M. Bretz should not be disbarred. Oscar G. Wickersham appears for Bretz. He recalls walking without guards enjoying visits from French civilians and local ladies and noting generous food offerings while praising a civilian host and an American aviator staying with them. He mentions English troops arriving, and reports being treated like a king with abundant meals and sightseeing opportunities.
