Fire Prevention Week designated for rural Texas homes

Experiments at College Station show cotton yields of 85 pounds lint per acre on Lufkin fine sandy loam when fertilized vetch is plowed under, 43 percent higher than soil without vetch. Vetch adds 5 tons green matter per acre at College Station, 6 to 7 at Tyler, and 7 to 8 at Nacogdoches, supplying 80 to 125 pounds of nitrogen per acre. Plant 15 to 20 pounds per acre from Oct 1 to Nov 15 using a drill or broadcast and cover with plow.
