Deaf users gain new worlds with teletypephone aid
A New York woman and a Baltimore friend exchange recipes using the teletypewriter coupler that links a teletype with a telephone. Deaf Stanford physicist Robert Weitbrecht created the device three years ago enabling typed conversations and saved transcripts. The system, funded by AT&T and Western Union, lets users pay standard rates while bringing warmth and a sense of closeness to deaf families.
