Birth of the Louisville Slugger and baseball’s rise
In 1884 Bud Hillerich, a Louisville woodturner, made a bat for Pete Browning after Browning cracked his bat. Browning hit well, launching Hillerich and Bradsby, the world’s oldest bat company, and shaping the Louisville Slugger’s legacy. The piece situates this moment amid early baseball’s growth, leagues, and famous players who defined the era.
