Social Security officials explain who gets the lump sum death benefit and why amounts vary. The payment usually goes to the widow or widower of an insured worker, or to the funeral payer under certain conditions. The standard amount is three times the deceased worker’s monthly retirement at 65, up to a $255 maximum, with typical payments between about $211 and $255. If the dependent had not worked enough under Social Security, they are not eligible. Last year the agency paid $936 million on records of 1,220,248 deceased workers.
Edwin F. Wahl 84 died Sunday evening in Junction while living at Monticello Retirement Center. Surviving are five daughters and a son, plus siblings and many grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Hodges-Fife Chapel with burial in Junction Cemetery. Wahl helped run Wahl Bros. and Schraub Garage and Hardware in the 1920s.
Gillespie County residents are invited to celebrate Senator Pete Snelson as he becomes Governor of Texas for a day on December 4. The oath will be at 9 am in the Senate chamber, followed by a reception and inaugural luncheon. Susan Snelson and the couple’s four children will join as Texas First Lady and family guests.
Gillespie County rancher Roland Hohmann in the Eckert Community started a program to improve deer habitat by selective tree cutting and controlled regrowth. He planned a staged brush cutting trial in 1970, focusing on live oaks and elms to boost browse within reach, while managing deer demand and preventing overharvesting.
Medicare carry-over lets October to December bills count toward the $50 annual deductible. Social Security officials note deductible must be met before Medicare payment. the program pays 40 percent after the deductible. The rule helps avoid paying the deductible twice across year end.
