Senator Lyndon B. Johnson will be feted December 4 at the Rice Hotel Crystal ballroom in Houston in a non partisan testimonial dinner expected to attract about 1000 friends and dignitaries. Tickets are $7.50, available by mail at 3401 South Main Street, Houston. Johnson has served in Congress since 1937 and became Senate Majority Leader in 1954, a record for the youngest to hold the post.
The Harper PTA met on Saturday November 7 at 3 00 pm with Rev Kenneth Norton delivering a talk from Matthew 514 We are the Light of the World The State Home in Kerrville director Mrs Byrd spoke noting the Kerrville home is the largest in the US with 1250 patients 800 ambulatory and features like an in house laundry letting patients take part in activities
Harper First Baptist Church was named winner of the District 6 Town and Country Achievement Award by the Baptist General Convention of Texas for 45 community projects including landscaping, library work, a year round recreation program, and a detailed community map survey. The award honors service to survivors after two fatal accidents near Harper.
Harper Longhorns defeated Center Point 40 to 20 to clinch the district 24B six man championship. Key scorers were Johnnie Cottle Carleton Wendel Howard Walker and Clifford Wienecke as Harper advances to meet the Nueces Canyon La Pryor winner with a potential bi district venue in doubt. Cottle left game with a cracked arm.
Harper area deer leases are nearly all taken as the annual hunting season starts Saturday. Rain has left unpaved roads soggy, possibly delaying some hunters. Locals report excellent coves last season and expect buck and turkey hunting to improve this year with many large bucks seen on ranches.
The Texas Hill Country opens its big game season amid abundant rains boosting deer and turkey prospects. Game Department notes heavier deer, larger antlers, and renewed populations after drought losses. Leases, licenses, and local prizes are advertised by Chambers of Commerce and hunting groups across Llano Kerr Gillespie Medina Mason and surrounding counties.
The grand jury met Monday to Wednesday and returned five indictments three for embezzlement one for passing as true a forged instrument and one for writing a bad check or draft. Also four civil cases in district court before Judge J W Weatherby were disposed of with two suits dismissed at defendant cost and a divorce granted with Pearl Locklin restored as Pearl Scharnhorst and $100 attorney fees awarded. Hermina Krauskopf vs Alfred Sauer et al ended with the defendant holding only a life estate in real property.
Mrs. Clayton Massey and son Brad visited her mother Mrs. Vera Parker in Kerrville where Mrs Parker fell and broke her wrist. Mrs. Roland Trees and son Roland Ted from Camp Wood visited Mr. and Mrs. Ted Rogers while Wilmar Klaehn, on furlough, stayed with his parents before leaving Saturday for Amarillo.
The staff photo notes the third high man scoring 259 as the team posted 769 to take top honors. Uvalde placed second and Dripping Springs finished third in the event.
The Harper Herald will award a fountain pen to the hunter who brings in the first buck at the Harper Locker Plant on opening morning of the yearly hunting season, Saturday. The prize honors the first deer entering the plant.
