Day of Prayer for Better Race Relations Observed

On May 17 churches and the National Baptist Convention of the U S A held a day of prayer for improved race relations. NCC president Dr Eugene Carter Blake urged national humility and forgiveness to heal racial conflict and bitterness and called Christians to be instruments of divine love amid a restless world.

Pecan Belt Casebearer Causes Much Damage Throughout Pecan Belt

The pecan nut casebearer is widespread in Texas and across the Pecan Belt, with damage varying by crop size. It overwinters as a larva in a cocoon, becomes active in spring, and damages nuts mainly via the first generation in May and early June. Multiple generations occur, with later generations affecting surfaces and leaves little damage. DDT, parathion, nicotine sulfate, and lead arsenate are listed as control options with notes on timing and safety. Two applications may be needed if infestation is heavy.

The Whetstones visited Harper and the Whetstones while local families hosted guests from Kerrville San Antonio and Fredericksburg. A rattlesnake incident near the Stapps occurred while watering the lawn but caused no injury.

Wildlife Conservation Stamp Promoted by Upper Llano District

The Post Office Department releases a three cent Wildlife Conservation stamp featuring a wild turkey. Available at Junction and other post offices. Texas wildlife officials report fifteen years of restocking with roughly 15000 white tailed deer released with generally successful results. Mule deer faced more failures and east Texas plants show no complete success though Palo Duro and north Texas populations grow. Rio Grande turkeys spread statewide but east of Austin often fail with one Freestone County project expanding under hunting pressure.

Farmers may file Form 2240 after June 30 to reclaim the 2 cent per gallon federal excise tax for gasoline used in farming during the first half of 1956.
