Don Bishop of Litchfield Illinois won first prize in a Bicentennial essay contest with the essay What is the Spirit of 76. He received a $1000 U S Savings Bond from Illinois Secretary of State Michael Howlett. More than 300000 Illinois students entered the contest. Mitsugi Ohno a Japanese immigrant glass blower at Kansas State University presented a glass Capitol replica to the nation for the Bicentennial. the 5000 hour piece will be housed at the Smithsonian.
Gillespie County Independent Cattlemen's Association plans a May 15 gala at the Exhibition Hall new Fairgrounds. Happy Hour at 6, banquet at 7 with ICA state president T A Cunningham speaking. Tickets $3, available at local banks or by mail. prizes include calf and hindquarter. Dance at 9 with Sammy Geistweidt. 15 290 per person admission.
Rainfall in Harper for April reached 3.79 inches with a possible 0.20 added by Tuesday night bringing year to date to about 5.19 inches. Mrs. Bonnie Rahe, LCRA rain recorder, reports January 0.26 inch February 0 March 0.94 and notes recent showers have lifted gloom and improved prospects for small grains and pasture.
Gillespie County Commissioners Court opened bids for the new Livestock Exhibition Building at Gullespie County Fair Grounds and awarded Jim's Welding & Pipe Yard of Harper the $11,480.55 contract. McMahon led the winning bid among five or six proposals. labor will be donated or provided separately by students and local workers. The court meets again Monday morning.
The Harper School dedicated the M. M. Stevens Physical Education Building funded by Harper native and Great Western Loan founder Mr. Stevens. Photos show Stevens addressing the crowd and Superintendent Elbert Schmidt thanking him for the philanthropic gesture. Also notes local social items including Mrs. Joe Rogers’ hospital stay and attendees at a Harper Firemen's Dance.
The Harper FFA Chapter hosts its 11th annual rodeo at Harper Community Park with a junior rodeo at 3 p.m. for ages 13 and under, a 5:30 p.m. Bar-B-Q, a 7 p.m. senior rodeo featuring events like Bull Riding and Calf Roping, a 9 p.m. Western dance by the Kountry Kousins of San Antonio, and various concessions by local clubs.
Rev. A Gitter of Harper will head Bellringer workers for a house to house May drive supporting the Texas Association for Mental Health. Carroll Bryant notes priorities including legislative network expansion and community mental health services for children. The association spreads education via Pierre the Pelican to new parents and free literature on mental health topics.
