Three railroad unions block wage increase bid
Rail unions Brothers of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen and the Switchmen's Union, representing 125 000 workers, refuse a 15 percent hourly raise agreed by 1 175 000 other railroad employees. They push for extra working rules, threaten strike, while mediation efforts falter. Railroads argue no basis for higher pay amid vast coverage and public impact. The arbitration history shows existing settlements for most labor groups. The engineers and firemen comparely rank among the highest paid in the industry.
