Harper School Closes For Week Due To Extreme Cold Spell
The Harper schools closed for the week as a fuel conservation measure and due to severe cold and ice on roads. End of January Tax and Poll Tax Due Date
The last day to pay property taxes without penalty and to secure poll taxes that grant voting rights is Saturday, January 31. Young people may obtain a poll tax exemption for 1948 if they turned 21 since Jan. 1, 1947 or will be 21 in 1948, with the exemption to be called for by Jan. 31. The clerk will keep the office open Thursday through Saturday for late taxpayers. Those over 60 are not required to secure an exemption in a county of this size. A 1946 Attorney General ruling requires the constitutional poll tax for those who previously voted without it, and crippled persons must pay $1.00 poll tax to vote. Penalties accrue after Feb. 1. post-deadline payments may forfeit voting rights. The week has seen a tax rush due to icy roads.
