Texans Supply Heaviest War Effort in Navy and Marine Corps
An official Navy statement credits Texas with sending the largest share of its population to naval forces, including the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. It notes 134,396 Texans enlisted since December 7, 1941, plus officers and ROTC groups and thousands of WAVES and women Marines. Texans also supplied sizable officer and enlisted ranks in the Marine Corps and Coast Guard, with cross references to garrison and battle casualties. The piece highlights Texas in home front efforts, including a 1944 National War Fund drive surpassing the state quota by about 10 percent and upcoming county drive for USO and related relief groups.
