Iowa battleship crew boosts war bonds and feats
The Iowa, a 45,090 ton battleship with over 30 knot speed, paid for shells through war bond sales exceeding $100,000 aboard the ship, likely higher in 1945. Crew spans many states, Canada, and the Philippines, with New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio prominent. The vessel houses extensive facilities from kitchens serving Seattle-sized meals to 50,000 spare parts, a 2,000-volume library, daily news broadcasts, and church and school programs for a multi faith crew.
