Fire at Rice Drug Store Causes Major Damage
A fire last Friday at the L. J. Rice drug store started by a heated vaseline can igniting wallpaper and fixtures. Insurance covers about nine thousand dollars of damage. Nearby Wyatt Johnson and Stauffer-Van Avery stores suffered smoke, water damage from firefighting and the incident, with wind complicating efforts. Firefighters fought with two water streams and a larger truck, while insurance adjusters review the loss. Louie Rice kept the store open and thanked it was not worse. The Hardin County Fair Association met November 25 in Eldora with many present. Officers were elected including Charles Norman as president and William Dunning as vice president. The board added three Eldora directors and named J G Boyd and R I Yarwood to audit books. Committees discussed widening the board to nine plus three from Eldora to strengthen county support for a fuller county fair.
