Eldora notes cover Pine Lake Country Club stock bylaws and fundraising, district tournament results with Eldora’s upset losses, and standings in the Iowa Cedar League. Reports praise Eldora players for teamwork and sportsmanship, plus operetta plans, spring vacation, girls basketball in sectionals, and declamatory contest results.
Charles Stauffer treated the firemen from the Busy Bee Cafe Friday morning after they battled a blaze in the Stauffer apartments above the Blackmun Clothing Store. The firefighters, drenched and chilled, appreciated a hot meal. the cause of the fire remains unknown per Mr. Stauffer.
The American Legion post and Auxiliary hosted Commander Pritchard of Onawa as a guest last Thursday night. Vice-commander Darrel Brown presided in Commander Moser's absence. A violin solo by Paul Lancaster and vocal numbers by Lucile Brown with Elizabeth Holmes at the piano pleased attendees. Dean Peisen introduced Pritchard, a dynamic speaker who outlined Legion aims including child welfare, veterans relief, hospital care for disabled veterans, and universal service. He urged antiwar profiteering and supported emergency relief and a regulated boxing bill. The evening concluded with apple pie à la mode, coffee, and dancing to Lancaster's group.
The United States began Herbert Hoover's presidency with a 6 hour ceremony described as dedication under God. He urged citizens to uphold the prohibition law while taking the oath from Chief Justice Taft and kissing the Bible. The day spanned from 10 30 a m to 5 p m with ceremonies at the Capitol and White House. Continued on first page.
The state Supreme Court declared the $100 million road bond act unconstitutional. It found no direct annual tax to cover interest and principal within 20 years, improper tax description, failure to retire bonds in 20 years, and restrictions on future gasoline tax changes. Justice William D. Evans wrote the opinion threatening a new act by the assembly. Senator Shaff expressed disappointment and said no substitute plan was ready.

Hardin County Bar Association held memorial services for Aymer D. Davis who died October 17, 1928. Judge Garfield presided. C. A. Bryson of Iowa Falls delivered the principal address. Letters from Chief Justice Evans and others praised Davis’s integrity and honor. Resolutions extolled his full professional pledge and loyalty to clients and colleagues.
Announcement cards announce the birth of a son to Mr. and Mrs. R G Rogers of Cedar Falls. He arrived Sunday February 24 weighing seven and a half pounds. Eldora friends send hearty congratulations. The boy will be named Bobby Glenn after his father, Eldora schools coach last year.
Consolidated Independent District voters go to the court house lobby on Monday March 11 from noon to 4 pm to elect two directors for eight years and a treasurer for two years. Candidates include George Starr Elvin J Ryan Dr H W Stonebrook W E Rathbone and J F Hardin Jr. Also announced Diamond Bros opens a new Eldora grocery on the west side of the square managed by F L Jones. Palm Sunday concert by Congregational church choir scheduled for March 24.
Judge Garfield convened district court for the fifth and final week of the February term. A jury found $60 for the plaintiff in Hensing vs Lacy, involving bootlegging allegations. Hazel Brown was learned to be divorced from Chas Brown for cruel treatment. Spurtin vs Shore concerned a real estate mortgage dispute. The next term starts April 29. City Dads Meet A regular council session heard treasurer and clerk reports and health officer Dr Gray. Two volunteer firefighters Ed Schultz and Max Smith were accepted. An ordinance let Boy Scouts patrol streets near the school to aid crossing safety. Valley Ball teams held a dinner at Busy Bee Cafe hosted by the losing captains Quinlin Short and Dale Adama. winning captain Enel Schmitt.
Eldora High School defeated Eldora Independent 44 to 37 on Monday night. Urquhart led Eldora with 16 points, Dornsbach and Lentz added eight and sixteen respectively, while Schwebke scored two. For Eldora Independent, Francis White and Emuel Schmitt each had ten points, Coach Hornish nine, Warner Woods six, and Ed White two. Kenneth Brown died in Kansas City after an accident last Wednesday. survived by his wife, mother, and sister Miriam. Burial was in Joplin.
Plan outlines a new primary road bond bill to replace a state act ruled unconstitutional. Attorney General John Vietcher to draft with Senators Shaff and Bergman, using anticipatory warrants based on Brookhart Lawrien bank concept to fund a six year road program without voter approval.
Last week L G Allbaugh farm management specialist spent two days in the county. In Eldora he met with record keepers to review entries for 1928 and plan for 1929. Four factors determine management returns per farm: crop percentage, yields per acre, livestock and crop area per worker, and machinery cost per acre. A chart showed a 1922 160 acre farm with no management returns due to low yields and high costs. Continued on last page.

Only about a third of measures pass. committees prune with many bills withdrawn or killed. Major successes include cattle tuberculosis expansion and a higher district judge pay raise, while overall appropriations rise beyond budget projections.
