Feed Tags Endanger Dairy Stock Across Markets

Feed tags, often attached with hoofshaped wire, break loose in sacks and fall into cattle feed. Nails, glass, screws and wire pieces poison dairy cows by puncturing stomachs, causing fatal injury. Producers urged to remove tags before opening bags and ensure all feed is free of dangerous objects.

Care at Calving Time for Dairy Cows

During calving time the cow should receive no feed for 24 hours following birth. Provide only 4 buckets of lightly warmed water that day. Gradually increase feeding over the next week and reduce ration for heavy producers for several weeks. Underfeeding is preferred to overfeeding. A light laxative feed helps prevent swollen udders and loss of appetite. Wheat pasture or wet hay aids digestible feeds. avoid strawage high in grain at calving.
