Train Strikes Car In Ackley Killing Couple and Injuring Children
A sedan was struck by an incoming Illinois Central passenger train at Ackley at 4:50 PM Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Smith and their three children were involved. Harlan 5 is believed fatally injured, Herman 16 and Aleta 19 survived with injuries. The family resided in Ackley and were bound for Grinnell. The crossing has a history of accidents and witnesses cited a lack of signal being given due to a nearby freight train. The Smiths were taken to Waterloo hospital. Mr. Smith died and Mrs. Smith died shortly after. Coroner Longenecker collected evidence at the scene.
