Death at the freight yards claims LeRoy Afford
LeRoy Afford, born February 17 1887, died Friday night after being struck by a freight train at the M and St L freight yards. He lived with his sister Mrs J E Taylor in Eldora and had recently moved from Chicago where he worked as a salesman before a nervous breakdown. The body was found by a Southbound train crew at about seven o’clock Friday morning and buried in Princeton Illinois last Sunday. He leaves a sister, a brother, and a Chicago wife and daughter. The weather in Des Moines showed unusual warmth early February with no new warm weather records yet.

An afternoon buggy accident on East Ndgington Avenue left Miss Byrl Thackrey severely injured with a fractured skull, and Mrs. Vinton and daughter Lola hurt after the buggy ran away on a hill near the Northern railway.Frank Smith in a following car rushed them to the hospital. Miss Thackrey later died from cerebral hemorrhage. Funeral notices followed for other local residents.
