Meet Mr Hoover A portrait of the president elect in 1929
The profile presents Mr Hoover as a paradoxical figure: frugal and restless in front of cameras, fond of opera and theater yet sparing alcohol, a strong jawed engineer president with a noted fondness for fishing and peanuts. It cites his joint translation with Mrs Hoover of Agricola and his status as a college bred engineer. The piece adds that America enters 1929 healthy, prosperous, and confident in industry, labor, roads, electric and gas services, auto ownership, stock ownership, and rising life insurance, with increasing investments abroad and amicable labor relations. It forecasts U S leadership in aviation and overall progress.
