Tom Purcell of Hampton and County Agent Hamilton stopped at the Ledger office on their way to Grinnell for the Sigma Delta Chi initiation. Hamilton, a Franklin County man, guided the Franklin team to a national contest victory in Europe last summer. Drake Relays draw 2600 athletes from 275 colleges and high schools for events at Drake University on April 23 and 24.

Second Mortgage Meeting Sees Committee Appointed
On Friday evening a meeting of those linked to the second mortgage for the fair occurred. Funds were raised for premiums last year and another sum this year to cover a deficit. No definite action was taken beyond appointing a committee to oversee matters. The second mortgage involved $2800. Miss Ruth Von Krog and Lorraine Warthow returned to Jews City after spring vacation. Mr. Von Krog escorted them to Marshalltown to catch their transport.

Eldora reports that a coal mine shaft will begin Monday with two experienced miners from St Dodge, Jurgeson and Suur. The shaft will be 6 by 8 or 6 by 10 feet, core depth 121 feet with vein 8 feet 4 inches thick. Roof consists of 80 feet sandstone and 7 feet slate. Project employs 33 men on three 8 hour shifts. Also Farmers Elevator Co installs a 24 inch attrition mill by June 15 with two 26 HP motors for custom grinding at the N W Elevator. Rumors say Nashua youths may install a grist mill on the Dan Vere property. plans include a 50 by 40 by 100 foot mill. Fire reports at Whitton include a Christian Church parsonage chimney fire causing $200 loss, and a farm home fire east of Whitten destroying the house. few goods saved. Water pipe break near Auto City Station raises concern over leaking water losses. Kersey remains improving after a decline.

Hubbard Eldora line to be built to ease heavy traffic
Delegates from Eldora and Hubbard telephone companies met at the Sirat National Bank in Eldora to approve a new metallic two wire line along the main highway. The aim is to connect Hubbard to Eldora and improve service as current lines are in poor condition and overburdened by traffic with Radcliffe Buckeye Gurdon City McCallburg and Zeaying areas mentioned. The Midora Company will build to the halfway point and Hubbard to meet them while the old Tildera line remains usable with limited repairs. Fire department responded to three alarms last weekend. A stove fire damaged the home of Dy. TD M Nyqulat Friday at 3 16 PM. Saturday night five boys fought a fire at Johan Molsclaw’s house at the foot of Burke hill. roof damage occurred. Sunday a barn fire at Md Crosbie farm southeast of town burned hay and machinery. the truck had a miss in it and was returned to station. barn valued at about 38000 to 40000 with partial insurance.
