Eldora Mayor George Janssen proclaims Saturday, September 21, as VFW Poppy Day. VFW representatives will sell buddy poppies on Eldora streets, and residents are urged to support the sale.
Funeral services for Rev. Carl William Swyter 82 retired minister of Steamboat Rock were held at 2 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church. He died Wednesday at his home after a long illness. Officiants were Rev. Kurt Marquardt and Rev. Howard Johnson with organist Mrs. Irwin Gast and vocalists including Mrs. Harold Hartman and Mrs. William Schuneman. Pallbearers were Lew Johnson Charles Sentman William Rose Wendell Luiken Henry Rose and William Schuneman. Flower ladies were Mrs. Enno Luiken and Mrs. Mike Finger. A Steamboat Rock resident since 1928 he retired 12 years ago born in Germany and married more than 50 years. Surviving are two sons and three daughters, two of whom are foreign missionaries.
Eldora VFW Post to sponsor a September 28 dance at the youth building with all proceeds to the crippled children's camp to be built by the VFW. Commander Clarence Struck says donors of over one dollar receive a camp fund card granting entry. Auxiliary to serve coffee and lunch. six piece orchestra lined up. expenses paid by the post.

Leo Wolcott of Eldora was re-elected chairman and chief executive officer of the Allied Theaters of Iowa Nebraska South Dakota eastern Missouri and southern Illinois for the 12th consecutive year. Harrison Wolcott of Eldora was elected secretary and also re-elected to the board of directors at the Sept 10 11 meeting at Lake Okoboji. Mrs Leo Wolcott accompanied them to the meeting.
The Rev. Father George Mahoney of St. Marys Eldora and former Air Force chaplain Rev. Philip Hamilton left Eldora Wednesday to attend the funeral ceremonies in Dubuque for Archbishop Henry P. Rohlman. They planned Mass Thursday and the Solemn Pontifical Mass of Requiem at St Raphael Cathedral Friday. Mahoney expected to return Friday.
Doctors at the State University of Iowa report Mrs Harold Rolph of Eldora is not paralyzed with polio, but has back and left leg issues. She plans to stay about two more weeks for therapy as neighbors assist with their six children. Mr Rolph works for Eldora city and the fire department has brought meals.
Eldora city council meeting amended the budget to raise street use tax from 15000 to 20000 and parking meter from 4000 to 7000 with an Oct 7 hearing at city hall. Transfers back 2000 to general fund, real estate for off street parking approved, airstrip fund transfer approved, rodent control contract 240, new library board member Walter Guenther, multiple building and sewer permits, plumbers bonds approved, mobile home park permit approved by health board.
Eldora plans an ordinance reading October 7 to base sewer rentals on 25 percent of net water bills with a 50 cent delinquency charge after the 15th. Current charges are 2 per quarter for businesses and 1 for residences. Officials say the move will fund sewer operations more fairly and raise anticipated income from about 4 000 to 6 000 dollars, with 1958 rentals totaling 3 900 and water bills 24 582.
Mrs J B Smith county president of the American Legion Auxiliary led a school of instruction for unit presidents and secretaries at the Eldora Legion club rooms Tuesday. Attendees from Iowa Falls Hubbard Eldora Alden Steamboat Rock and Radcliffe are listed in the group photo caption.
The Denniston and Partridge Co. announced the closing of their Whitten yard as of Monday this week. Materials will be divided between their other yards at Union and Albion.
About 240 people attended Eldora community school PTA’s first meeting of the year held Monday night. Dr. R. C. Rogers presided while Don LaVelle welcomed teachers and spoke on Chamber of Commerce activities. The program featured Daniele Deborne, the French exchange student, plus group singing and introductions of new and old Eldora faculty. The next meeting is set for Oct. 14 with Rex R. Bateson to speak on his European tour and the London American Bar Association meeting.
Eldora hosts an Open House during National Home Week from Sept 21 to 29. The home in Vinton Heights, built by Eckel and Folkerts Construction Co of Steamboat Rock, sits in the northwest corner of Winton Heights on Highway 57 and will be open to the public from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday Sept 28. The issue also features two full pages of advertisements showing new Eldora homes built by local firms.
El dora First Methodist will hold a noon meeting after Sunday services to vote on buying the Edna Way property at 1702 12th Street for a parsonage. The offer is 20 000 dollars. trustees and the official board support the purchase and urge attendance.
Tjaden says about a thousand gallons used, many charges fall or change little after abulation. Ordinance will be read at three meetings and published before passage. Real change in the charging system expected in about three months.
The Hardin County Year Club held a noon luncheon at Pine Lake Country Club with 64 members and 13 guests, a new attendance record. Thirteen new members were admitted. three members died in the year. All members attended except George Shafer. New members include C J Kelsey, Mrs. William Butler, Mrs. Mary Gibbs Norman, Rogs Reece, Mrs. Lillian Bucy, and others from Ackley Eldora Iowa Falls New Providence Hubbard and surrounding towns.
Marriage licenses were issued to Richard Ites Jr and Mary Jara both of Iowa Falls. Sept. Lyle Larkford 18 and Linda Lee McCollock 17 both of Iowa Falls Sept. 17.
Representatives of the Hardin county 75-year club from towns across the county attend the annual club dinner hosted by the Eldora Rotary at Pine Lake Country Club. The group arrangement shows members and spouses from Iowa Falls Eldora Radcliffe Union Steamboat Rock Ackley and Hubbard with several named attendees attending the event.
Howard R. Fuller of New Providence is recommended for appointment as rural carrier. He has been serving as a substitute carrier, later verified in the assignment process.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Berge son Funeral Home and at Zion Lutheran church for Mrs Sanford Helgeson 28 who died Wednesday at University Hospital Iowa City. She is survived by her husband and two children Mary and Steven, her parents Mr and Mrs Ernest Dubberke Garden City, and other relatives. Interment in Zion cemetery with pallbearers Arnold Berven Tommie Helgeson Paul Helgeson Joe Athnan James Caster Norman McDonald.
Mrs Helen E Schumacher Hardin county treasurer announced this week that personal and property taxes for the last half of 1956 will become delinquent as of Oct. She said Wednesday the collections were coming In pretty well but quite a few people remain to pay their taxes. Delinquent taxes will receive a penalty of three fourths of one per cent for each month. Delinquent list will be published In November as required by law. Taxpayers are advised to furnish the description of their property in their old receipts.
Miss Esther Whetstone a state 4-H staffer will visit Hardin county Tuesday September 24 for the county 4-H organization meetings. She will aid the county 4-H girls committee with Marlene Petersen at 10 am at the extension office and at 1:30 pm in the Hardin county youth building. The talks cover reviewing the past year and the program philosophy while planning for clothing projects including wardrobe planning grooming care and construction.
Mrs William G Lege lie conducts a special sale to liquidate the late husband estate at Leslie's jewelry store on the square. Merchandise and fixtures will go in the liquidation with sales hours through Thursday to Saturday. An auction will follow Saturday in the garage behind the Leslie building featuring tools a motorboat canoe guns fishing gear musical instruments and more. Auctioneers Knowles and Kramer.
Mary Severson daughter of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Severson Evergreen Sherman community fell from a hay mow on the Philip Hemphill farm Sunday afternoon. She was taken to Story City hospital for x rays.
