Steamboat Rock Name Origin Lost to Time
Lithopolis was once named Steamboat Rock after a rock bluff on the river that looked like a fleet of steamboats. A wheelhouse impression with a pine tree stood on the rock until lightning in 1858 damaged it. Erosion since then has removed the rock’s steamboat visage and the original name history remains unclear.
