Brochures outlining the Alden consolidated school district bond proposal were to be distributed over the weekend. Prepared by Supt. A. O. Larson and board members, the pamphlet explains changes and added facilities from the $225,000 bond. It includes a table of estimated tax rates for town and rural properties.

Ed McCarthy says a 28 foot extension to the main building at the Mc Carthy Hatchery will add a basement a new office a storage room and double the battery space for the hatchery boosting capacity and operations.
Mrs. Hilda Bernard and Mrs. L. C. Buck spent about ten weeks touring from New York aboard the SS United States to Southampton. They visited Birchington and family, Dover, Canterbury, Margate, Ramsgate, Cliftonville, Edinburgh, Loch Lomond, Dublin, London sights, and Buckingham Palace. A three thousand mile continental bus tour covered Brussels, the Rhine, Black Forest, Switzerland, Paris, Nice, and Rome highlights.
Hardin County's Racine bridge dispute shows no new developments. Grand Jury reports are pending, with no session Friday Saturday or Monday. Publisher Carl Hamilton appeared before jurors while county officials await next step in the investigation.
Retail sales here totaled 102 766 35 in the 12 months ending March 31, 1953, per State Tax Commission figures. Hardin County totals reached 479 202 41 with Eldora Ackley Iowa Falls and rural areas listed individually. Iowa Falls neared nine million dollars for the period, a drop from 1951 and 1952 but rise over 1950.
Hardin county education officials scheduled a meeting to review objections to proposed boundaries for a new Hubbard district. The board will adjust the limits and set an election date to finalize the district. County superintendent M. Z. Albers will determine the election timing.
Leo Stull son of Mr and Mrs Ed Stull of Steamboat Rock was accidentally shot in the thigh while duck hunting near Clarion. The gun discharged when jarred from a boat seat and the charge entered the back of his thigh. He is confined to a Clarion hospital.
The cornerstone for the new First Baptist Church at Steamboat Rock was laid Sunday during an 11 39 a m service. Ben Johnson and Alfred Gast led the stone laying as building committee and trustees chairmen. The 650000 project remains under construction with completion hoped for January 1954. Rev Frederick Y Lower leads the church with building committee members including Johnson Klatt Rose DeVries Frerich Johnson and others.
Thirty four farmers gathered to harvest 30 acres of corn in two hours. The crop yielded 10 bushels per acre under good neighbor deeds. Edge, recovering from a heart attack, received support from the community. Women of the Salon Evangelical United Brethren church Hubbard and neighbors served lunch. a group photo will appear in Fri Gay's Index.
The state versus Robert E. Merrill was heard in district court yesterday. Merrill is charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Judge H. C. Nichols presided. The Radcliffe fire department answered two calls in three minutes Sunday afternoon, both lightning related. A cattle shed near Wayne Varnum was struck with no livestock harmed after cattle were removed. A home on Ben Hodson Street sustained kitchen fire damage. A third lightning strike damaged wiring at the Don Winterfield farm home nearby.
Chest officials urged residents to donate to the annual fund this week even if not contacted during last night's house to house campaign. To learn their block captain's identity, people may call Mrs. J J Shorts at 273. Corn contributions continue at the courthouse corn crib. A partial list of C Club members was announced including American Legion Mrs Sam Greeswelg Marks Drug and several local businesses and individuals. The full list will appear in Friday's Index.
Union farmer Dale Nance leads the ear corn contest sponsored by D and R Radio Television. He submitted a horn ear measuring 143 inches long and weighing 13 1/2 ounces. Prize three clock radios will be awarded by Bud Reagen, manager of D and R, as the deadline nears in five days.
Eldora contractor Les Vinton purchased the old Wallace property from the Nellie Hudson estate on Saturday, including several lots. A second nearby property south of the school did not sell. Vinton plans to tear down the Wallace house.
James L. George, 36, former Herald-Index editor, was appointed editor of the Grinnell Herald-Register, succeeding A. L. Irisbie who led the paper 46 years. George joined Grinnell staff in August 195, after stints at Tama News Herald and Eldora’s Hardin County Index. He served as a captain in WWII and later edited both the Index and the merged Herald-Ledger after 1949 consolidation.
The Farm Bureau and related groups schedule events from Oct 19 to Oct 31, including meetings at Ackley Alden Eldora Waterloo Iowa Falls Radcliffe Eldora churches and community centers. Highlights feature a meat animal judging in Waterloo, 4H girls training in Eldora, Halloween ball in Radcliffe, and multiple neighborhood meetings.
Ed Collins a 55 year old farmer from Whitten lost the third finger of his right hand in a corn elevator accident Thursday afternoon. The finger was amputated shortly after the injury and Collins was resting at his home three miles northwest of Whitten on Friday.
