A recounting of a 1888 bar hunt starting with supplies from perfusions to gowbelly and beans. The narrator, with his father, spots a large bar across a valley and devises a two barrel plan to kill and salt the meat, aided by a cunning use of cotton gin.
Glen Ford stars as a secret pistol practicing gunman seeking revenge for his father’s murder. He falls for Jeanne Crain and marries, vows to quit his gun to live peacefully, but a rival outlaw played by Broderick Crawford tests his resolve. Surprising climax awaits audiences. November 11 12 13 showings.
A short excerpt from a school speech class titled Superior Seniors describes after dinner speeches in the hot lunch room with students drinking cokes. It includes a sample quotation about anatomy where a student jokes about organs and vowels, ending with a note on fun and laughter.
The first grade decorated for Halloween and held a costume parade for other grades. They enjoyed cupcakes from Mrs. Eckhoff and candy bars from the American Legion Auxiliary. A night school visit is planned for Wednesday Nov. 14. Peggy McDonald joined fifth grade from State Center. Fifth through eighth graders note perfect attendance by Bobby Callaway, Margaret Eckhoff, Gary Frerichs, Carla Heffelmeier, Susan Hoffman, Vector Luiken, Gordon Taylor, Kathy Taylor, Kathy Blosch, Eloise Gast, Roger Gast, Beverly Havens, and George Luiken. On Nov. 1 a visit to the voting machine preceded a debate between Democrats and Republicans as they study party history.
The sophomore class announces a bake sale on November 10 at 10 am at Eilers Store in Steamboat Rock. Cookies cakes candies and caramel apples will be sold to raise funds.
Congratulations to Phyllis Saint Karen Beane and Linda Asher on being elected basketball cheerleaders from a group of five. Alternate cheerleaders are Mary Last and Sharon Smith. Attend games at Clemons on Nov. 18 to support the team.
The speech class has been practicing after dinner speeches this week and jokes about their wit. The magazine sale campaign fell short this year as salesmen struggled to reach customers. Dave Luiken remains in Iowa City hospital Ward C 54 University Hospital Iowa City Ta and would welcome cards as he recovers. The motto remains Quality must be built in to stand out.
Miss Joan Foster born in Eldora attended New Providence schools and Iowa State Teachers College Cedar Falls where she earned a two year certificate. She taught previously at Melbourne and Postville and now lives in New Providence driving to school daily. Students see her as a cheerful, well liked teacher who enjoys reading.
A narrator recalls his first National Guard encounter with hazing, medical forms, and weapons drill. He describes the paper checks for age family medical history, the awkward pistol handling, and the demanding drill sergeants during the initial experience. The chaotic procedure ends with dismissal after about an hour.
On Wednesday November 14 parents are invited to Steamboat Rock school, with students dismissed in the afternoon. At 7 30 p m the high school will hold a short program followed by about an hour of 15 minute classes. Refreshments will be served in the basement after the classes.
Last Tuesday a school mock election tracked national results with notable differences. Eisenhower won re election. Hickenlooper led Senate race 64 to 36. Hoegh beat Loveless for governor. O Malley trailed 47 percent. Nicholas won lieutenant governor. H R Gross topped his Democratic challenger. Korean bonus bill passed by a wide margin.
A reader letter from Rev. Bob Baker argues dancing leads to immorality and broken homes. He cites scripture and sends a book titled What's Wrong With the Dance to Dennis, Dave, and Delores. The Statice staff thank readers and invite responses to column discussions.
Point Pleasant church schedules a 9:45 a m worship service led by Richard L Miller and a 10:30 a m Sunday School. An Adult Bible class potluck and fellowship is planned for Friday at 6 30 p m in the church parlors. A stream of social visits includes Mossman, Dreier, Clark, Hoelscher and Moseman families visiting relatives in nearby towns.
Sunday services at New Providence Friends Church led by Rev Worthy A Spring include Bible School at 10 a.m and Morning Worship at 11 a.m with evening services at 7 30 p m Junior and Youth groups plus Young People meet at 6 45 p m The church in Chester cooperates with Chester for Tuesday November 13 finance workshop in Bangor all day and a Honey Creek Women’s Missionary Societies gathering on Thursday November 15 with a potluck and meetings in Bangor and Honey Creek.
Gene and Lyle joined by the Tabers and Kielsmeiers in Waterloo and Hubbard mark birthdays and Army plans. James Lettow visits his grandmother before leaving for army service next Tuesday. A large Hubbard Legion hall dinner honors moving families from Iowa Falls to California with many Brandts and Tabers present. Honey Creek youth attend a William Penn college conference at Oskaloosa with multiple sponsors and speakers. Open house for Mr and Mrs Robert Sayer marks their golden anniversary, while various visits and weekend gatherings fill Eldora and nearby towns.
Augusta Gabrielson and Robert Sayer were married November 7, 1906, at Eldora in the home of Stephen Sayer. They have six grandchildren and five living children Lucile Meeker Esther Kiboze Lois Merits Ackley Merle Sayer Wendell Sayer. The couple hosted dinner with neighbors and families before a Honey Creek quartet sang at Chapel church homecoming.
