Eldora Hires New Girls Coach and Five Teachers

Eldora voters welcome Edward Engstrom as new girls basketball coach and junior high science and history instructor. Five new teachers join the district, reducing vacancies to two. Supervising duties include playground work and football coaching. New staff include Marion Wolkenhauer and Marilyn Kanellis, with Richard Warren as vocational agriculture instructor. Audry Kinney and Ivadell Daleske fill two first grade posts.

Ferris to Preach Farewell Sermon at S A Church

Ferris announces a farewell sermon at Steamboat Rock Presbyterian Church next Sunday May 4 and will depart May 5 for Fairfax Missouri. He will serve as pastor of Fairfax and English Grove Presbyterian Churches and be ordained and installed by St Joseph Presbytery Synod of Missouri in early May. Ferris has led Steamboat Rock as student pastor since June 1950.

Evangelist Rev Newington to Appear at Ivester

Evangelistic services to be held at the Assembly of God starting Sunday May 4 with Rev Arthur Newington of Dover England in charge. Services nightly at 7 45 except Monday. Newington a well known minister and world traveler making his fifth U S visit, first traveling from Belgium to San Francisco via Cape Horn. He describes experiences in England during both world wars and bombing raids.

Hardin Grundy 100F Homecoming At Iowa Falls

Hardin and Grundy Odd Fellows marked the 133rd anniversary of Odd Fellowship in America with ceremonies at Iowa Falls. Lodges from Eldora Union Hubbard Iowa Falls Grundy Center Reinbeck Dike and Beaman attended. over 150 Odd Fellows and Rebekahs participated. The program included music by Eldora Rebekah Kitchen Band and 25 year membership jewels for three members.

Banquet Draws 150 from Across Iowa

More than 150 men from across Iowa attended the annual Men's Quaker Movement banquet at Friendship Lodge Quaker Heights last Monday evening. Speakers included Rev. Frank Davis of Marshalltown First Friends' Church, Rev. Ernest C. Lamb, and Charles S. Ball of William Penn College. Don ald Gatrelle of Albia provided song entertainment as ladies from Bangor and Liberty meetings served dinner.

Planting over 100 trees at Eldora City Dump

City crews led by Dr. R. E. Gray and Charles Stage planted more than 100 trees shrubs and flowering plants at the Eldora City Dump. Species included Chinese chestnut Orient-Nanking cherry crab spruce hawthorn apple pear plum and apricot trees plus grapes lilies roses and peonies. The project sponsored by the Eldora Woman's Club Public Welfare Department transformed the grounds into a neat orderly area and serves as a lead-off for a broader cleanup campaign.

Water Systems School Offered for Har din County Dealers

Water system dealers in Hardin County are invited to a May 8 school on pumps and water systems at the Central States Electric Co Office in Eldora. Arrangements are by the Eldora electric company manager. The event is part of 89 statewide meetings for Water Systems Month.

County Home TV Fund Reaches $60

Eldora Rotarians voted to contribute 25 toward purchasing a TV at the Hardin County home raising the fund to 60. Kiwanis Club gave a like amount, with 5 from C. Q. Short, Andrle and Creps. Donations welcome via E. J. Matheson, Cecil Rooks or C. H. Shannon. Grub leads Iowa Falls effort to buy a second set for inmates and women.

New Providence Wins Two Ratings In Music Contest

New Providence high school sent the boys quartet and two vocal solos to the state music contest at Vin ton last Saturday. Bob Moon earned a Division I rating for his baritone solo and Allan Pool a Division II rating in bass. The quartet consisted of Allan Pool Bob Moon William Broer and Donald Beach with Mrs Wanda Dummermuth as accompanist. The school band and choral groups will compete in the state finals for large groups at LeGrand next Saturday May 3.

Complete Plans For Getting Out Vote In County

Farm Bureau leaders in every township in Hardin county have completed plans for a month long drive to get all eligible adults to the polling places for the June primaries. The bi partisan drive will contact Democrats and Republicans to nominate the best candidates for public office. Mrs. Emory Lake will head the drive with a statewide committee including Maurice Cook and local leaders in each township. The effort uses direct mail, telephone and in person reminders, broken into township and school district divisions with volunteer directors named for each township.

Poppy Day Contest Winners Named At Training School

The annual Poppy Day contest by the American Legion Auxiliary announced six top contestants led by Donald Barker and Floyd Durbin, who will advance to district competition. Winners received awards in a ceremony led by Mrs. R. M. Hunt, with posters displayed in Eldora under art instructor Ruby Coonradt supervision. Judges were Mrs. Cecil Rooks, Mrs. Eldon McVeety and John L. Butler.

Rev Imes Announces Eldora Church Summer Hours Start Sunday

Rev Ralph Imes says Eldora Congregational Church will begin summer worship on Sunday May 4 with a morning service from 8:00 to 8:45. The change frees the rest of the day for members who want to travel or play, and attendees are invited to dress accordingly.

Senior Swing Show Promises A Unique Event

Eldoran seniors stage An Episode in Frustration in the school auditorium on Wednesday. The original script is by Gordon Lamb Frank Nowasell David Wilson George Fagg with 42 seniors in the cast. Ring Found After 44 Years Recoveries at Hubard Farm

Forty four years after a wedding at the Bekemeier home in Hubard H Boeke lost his wedding ring on the Willy Hilker farm now Frederick Krueger’s. While harrowing a garden Krueger found the ring on a harrow tooth and later Boeke identified it. The ring is returned to its owner after decades.

Once in a blue moon lightens Eldora prize draw

Hubbard Teachers Get Pay Raise at Hubbard Board Meet

Eleven teachers signed contracts confirming return after pay increases granted by the Hubbard board of education. Five indicated they would not return, names including Mrs. Glen Robinson and Miss Annice Reece. Returning staff include Supt. A. H. Brauer, Herman Harris, Craig Downing, and Donald Bogenrief, among others. Open house for the new school was May 1. the cafeteria has operated since April 21, with homemaking room and shop to open next fall.

Cave In Found on Idora Farm Near Hardin County

A hole about 6 feet wide opened in a field on the Orville Vigors farm southeast of Idora when Ray Roling plowed. The ground collapsed, the tractor narrowly passed, and Roling estimated a 12 foot deep cavity with water and a crevice beneath. It is regarded as a miracle the tractor did not overturn.

Nellie F Hudson dies in Marshalltown at niece’s home

Nellie F Hudson died Wednesday morning in Marshalltown at the home of her niece Mrs Dan Turner after a short illness. Funeral services are planned for Saturday at the First Methodist Church Eldora. Born March 4 1868 she taught in Hardin County and Eldora High School before moving to Grandview Washington in 1912. She later taught in Staples Minnesota for 17 years retiring in 1932 and returned to Eldora. Surviving are brother B F Hudson of Mt Pleasant Tennessee three nieces Blanche Hudson Genevieve Hudson and others.
