Plans for the 106th Hardin County Fair in Eldora August 1-4 are underway. Secretary Wayne Bartholomew invites youth and adults to “discover the discoveries” and promises livestock and home economics displays, plus evening grandstand shows featuring Ava Barber.
Wellsburg in Grundy county hosts a two day 21 and 22 event with the Wellsburg Community Club sponsor offering entertainment, bingo, barbecues, a kiddie parade, prizes, and a parade led by the Wranglers Drill Team. Special drawings award bicycles and a tricycle. Event features include a square dance, magic show, and musical quartets. Rides by Murphy Amusements operate both days. Hardin county fair activities and new 1977 features are also announced with entries advancing to the Iowa State Fair and a bicycle rodeo for 4H.
Steve Nelson director for Eldora summer recreation program reports expanded participation in the miscellaneous games for ages 8 to 11. The four week program runs Monday through Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the asphalt playground near Eldora school with alternate sites as needed. Golf tennis and crafts are also offered in two two week sessions with 24 volunteers aiding Nelson.
Eldora Community School Board approved two teacher contracts for 1977 78 including Kay Roelfsema to the high school English post and Mary Juergens to the part time elementary music position. Also approved were Floyd Wallace as vocal instructor and Dan Chase as high school vocal teacher.
City officials in Eldora and nearby south Hardin county towns reported this week that existing water supplies should avoid summer cuts, while monitoring the situation for a possible shortage. Wells 120 to 300 feet deep feed the towns with continued limited usage urged, and figures show Eldora uses about 600,000 gallons daily, Union up to 1,000,000 with farmer sales, Steamboat Rock about 25,000. Hospital notes list local patients and a Des Moines hospital patient returns home for recovery.
Eldora residents join an art instruction program led by Sharon McGinnis of Des Moines each Saturday morning. While youths enjoy crafts tennis and golf Eldora adults pursue ongoing education in the arts.
